Dr. Ferenc Dalnoki-Veress conducted an in-depth analysis of a U.S. drone strike in Afghanistan, one that intended to target ISIS terrorists, but instead ended with the killing of civilians. Dalnoki-Veress’ research was cited in a lengthy Washington Post story on the errant strike, and the professor recently spoke with us about his research and work at the Institute.

The Government Accountability Office has named the Middlebury Institute a partner school, ensuring targeted outreach and recruiting of Institute students for internships that frequently result in job offers after graduation. The designation came about after extended collaboration with MIIS and Middlebury alumni employed at GAO.

The Monterey Initiative in Russian Studies (MIR) recently hosted a panel discussion on the Afghanistan crisis and its regional and global consequences. Panelists included Dr. Elena Chernenko, special correspondent at the Kommersant daily newspaper in Moscow; Anatol Lieven, senior fellow for Russia and Europe at the Quincy Institute for Responsible Statecraft; Rakesh Sood, distinguished fellow at the Observer Research Foundation; and Clarissa Ward, CNN’s chief international correspondent.
Professor Jason Blazakis, director of the Center on Terrorism, Extremism, and Counterterrorism, recently wrote a piece for the Washington Post warning that the next 9/11-scale event in the United States is likely to stem from domestic terrorism.
