Teen spirit took hold of the Middlebury Institute campus on Friday as local high school students from Monterey and Seaside took part in a special program designed to introduce them to the many benefits of foreign language and international education. Now in its eighth year, this program has become a happy tradition for MIIS students who enjoy the chance to share their culture, language, or chosen area of expertise with a group of younger students from the area.

The high school students had the opportunity to learn about different cultures from students in the Intensive English Programs (ESL), to see a demonstration of consecutive and simultaneous interpretation by students in the Translation and Interpretation (MATI) and Conference Interpretation (MACI) programs, to participate in discussions about study abroad opportunities with International Education Management (MAIEM) students, and to get a language lesson from students in the Teaching a Foreign Language (MATFL) degree program. They heard a traditional Kazakh song, learned about wedding ceremonies in Libya, got to try on a Japanese kimono, and tasted Turkish and Kuwaiti home baked treats, to name a few of the presentations provided by ESL students, and they left with tips about language learning and study abroad opportunities. We can only hope our visitors had as much fun as our own students did!
