Former Ambassador to Ukraine Visits MIIS
March 25, 2014
Steven Pifer, former ambassador to Ukraine, currently of the Brookings Institute, gave a public lecture on Russian Power Politics as they relate to Ukraine and Crimea at the Monterey Institute on March 24. He explained the complicated economic and cultural relationship between Russia and Ukraine and provided insight into possible outcomes of this crisis, arguably the greatest rift between the West and Russia since the end of the Cold War. His talk, part of the Spring Colloquium at MIIS, came on the same day as Russia was suspended from the G8 group of eight leading industrialized countries and as the Russian military increased their activities along the border with Ukraine. If the lively question and answer session that followed is any indication, students and community members alike relished the opportunity to participate in a discussion on a developing international crisis with one of the world’s leading experts on the issue.
