The Monterey Terrorism Research and Education Program at the Monterey Institute hosted its second annual student-driven conference on March 6-7. This year the focus was on terrorism and counter-terrorism in Africa with several panel discussions with noted experts in the field as well as students, and a keynote address by former Congressman Jim Kolbe.

In a major policy address delivered at the Monterey Institute of International Studies on January 18, United Nations Secretary-General Ban Ki-moon spoke passionately about his vision of a more peaceful future and lauded the role played by the Institute in promoting disarmament and nonproliferation education. He gave special recognition to the innovative and effective teaching methods of Dr.
Special Forces veteran and terrorism expert Brigadier General (ret.) Russell D. Howard—also an alumnus of the Monterey Institute—has been appointed as the new director of the Monterey Terrorism Research and Education Program (MonTREP).
