New Peace Corps Fellows Program at MIIS “Exceeding Expectations”
Christopher Voerg-Jones (MPA ’14) says his three-year experience as a Peace Corp Volunteer in Bulgaria helped him develop skills that he is now honing further in his chosen graduate degree program of Public Administration. When he started the program in the fall he had his sights on specializing in international development with a focus on human rights and has now broadened his scope to include an interest in social entrepreneurship.

The fall 2012 class at MIIS is one of the largest incoming classes in the 57-year history of the Institute, at 420 students. The group includes students hailing from 35 countries and speaking 28 languages.

Monterey Institute Community Mourns Loss of Dr. Peter Grothe
Dr. Peter Grothe, emeritus director of International Student Programs and longtime instructor, mentor and supporter passed away on Saturday, June 16, following a serious illness over the past five months.
MIIS Ranks Third in Nation for Peace Corps Master’s International Participation
The Peace Corps and the Monterey Institute of International Studies announced today that the Monterey graduate school now ranks in a tie for third in the nation in terms of participation in the Peace Corps Master’s International program, with 26 students enrolled in the program and serving overseas as of the ranking date of September 30, 2011.
In Memoriam: Longtime Friend of MIIS Laurence P. Horan
Laurence P. “Larry” Horan, former chair of the Monterey Institute Board of Trustees and a friend of the Institute through five decades of service to the Monterey community, passed away on Monday, January 23. He will be missed by his many good friends among the MIIS campus community.

Heather Kokesch
Heather is an alumna of the Monterey Institute of International Studies holding a Master's degree in TESOL and a certificate in Language Program Administration. Heather manages the Translation and Interpretation Short Programs and the logistics for the Intensive English Programs as well as the Translation and Interpretation portion of Custom Language Services as a full-time staff member at MIIS.
Peace Corps Master's International TESOL
Mica Tucci is pursuing a MA in Teaching English to Speakers of Other Languages (TESOL) at the Monterey Institute. She is also part of the Peace Corps Master's International program. Mica did her Peace Corps service in El Salvador and is currently applying to the Fulbright Program. She believes that the Monterey Institute is a perfect match for students interested in the PCMI program.

Peace Corps Event Fills Irvine Auditorium for Celebration of 50 Years of Service
On Saturday, October 8, an estimated three hundred people gathered at the Monterey Institute’s downtown campus to participate in a celebration of the 50th anniversary of the Peace Corps. The day began with a screening of the film “An American Idealist: The Story of Sargent Shriver” and continued with panel discussions about the early years of the Peace Corps and the impact of service on careers. After an international tea and coffee reception, guests filled the Irvine Auditorium for a sold-out lecture by renowned author and Returned Peace Corps Volunteer Paul Theroux.
