Monterey Institute Community Mourns Loss of Longtime Professor Leo van Lier
The Monterey Institute community was sad to learn over the holiday break of the passing of longtime professor Leo van Lier on December 23. A professor of educational linguistics, Leo joined the Institute faculty in 1986.
Record Number of MIIS Students Awarded Prestigious Fulbright Scholarships
Six students from the Monterey Institute will receive U.S. Fulbright scholarship awards for the 2012-2013 academic year, the most in the Institute’s 57-year history. This surpasses last year's record of five, which had MIIS students landing more U.S. Fulbrights on a per capita basis than every top-ten school in the 2012 U.S. News & World Report college rankings, with a higher applicant success rate than all but one of these leading schools. A seventh Fulbright applicant from the Monterey Institute is an alternate and may still be selected.
“Babel No More” Author Michael Erard to Lecture on Language Super-Learners

Student-Driven Symposium to Celebrate Foreign Language Education
The student-driven event “Celebrating Foreign Language Education: A Monterey Bay Symposium” will take place on Saturday March 10, 2012, at the Monterey Institute campus. This symposium will bring together local teachers, students, administrators and other professionals from the Monterey Bay area to discuss current trends and issues in the field of foreign language education.
Becoming a Better Language Teacher
Bryce Johnson is a student at the Monterey Institute pursuing a MA in Teaching a Foreign Language (TFL). He teaches Korean language classes through BUILD, a student-run organization the offers free language classes to the Monterey Institute community. Johnson has been teaching BUILD classes for 3 semesters, using the experience to better himself as a teacher and make himself more attractive to future employers. Johnson's goal is to become a professor of Korean Studies.

Beyond yoUrself In Language Development (BUILD) is a student-run organization that provides low-level language classes to the Monterey Institute of International Studies community. All of the classes are completely free, informal, and fun! They are taught by students in the Teaching English to Speakers of Other Languages and Teaching Foreign Language programs at the Monterey Institute.

It’s hard to think of a more inspiring setting for a day of structured intercultural activities than the natural beauty of Pfeiffer Big Sur State Park in the fall. Every year Professor Peter Grothe invites students in his popular course in intercultural communication—as well as students from all degree programs at MIIS—for an all-day retreat in Big Sur.
New “International Friendship Program” Has Successful Launch
The Monterey Institute of International Studies has launched the MIIS International Friendship Program, matching incoming international students from various degree programs with enthusiastic local families. The program provides a unique opportunity for students and local families to share their cultures and backgrounds with one another and learn something new. The local families are not expected to provide students with a place to stay, but rather to invite students to explore life outside of the campus.
