What is the deadline for the application and what are some other dates of importance?

Applications are due (online form) by 15 March 2014. Selected Fellows will be contacted by 1 April 2014 and so will those on the waitlist. Selected Fellows will be given until 15 April 2014 to accept the Fellowship and to pay their deposit fee. Selected Fellows must commit themselves to a two-day online training in May 2014.

What is the I-20 or DS-2019 Application?

A completed I-20 Application or DS-2019 Application is required in order to demonstrate your ability to pay tuition and living expenses.The Institute is required per U.S.

Can I use copies of my or my guarantor's tax return document (1040) from last year as the substitute for submitting the I-20 or DS-2019 Application and/or bank statements?

No. The tax return information from last year only tells us you or your sponsor’s income from last year. We need to know if you have the sufficient funds set aside for your studies at the Institute.

What materials are needed to apply?
  • Personal statement

  • Degree Map (with planned coursework through graduation)
  • Completed application form including contact details for three organizations you might serve while on IPSS.
7. Is there financial aid available for the FMS program?

There are a limited number of merit- and need-based full and partial scholarships for the FMS training and field program. All applicants (current students and non-students) are eligible to apply for scholarships. Please indicate that you would like to be considered for a scholarship in the online application.  

6. Can I receive academic credit for the FMS training program?

The FMS training program is available for 1-6 credits on a pass/no-pass basis. The FMS field program is available for 6 credits. It is the participant's responsibility to verify whether the credit receiving institution accepts the credits from the Middlebury Institute of International Studies.

All participants must submit the online application and upload a resume, recent official or unofficial transcript (or copy of their diploma) within the online application.

2. When is the Frontier Markets Scouts training program offered?

FMS training sessions are typically offered twice a year (winter and summer cycles).

The winter training programs will be offered in two locations:

  • Monterey, January 12-23, 2015 
  • Amsterdam: February 16-27, 2015
