Frontier Market Scouts Head to Assignments on Five Continents
Twenty-one Frontier Markets Scouts recently completed training at the Monterey Institute and took their first steps towards a career in impact investing. The Frontier Market Scouts program was jointly developed and managed by the Monterey Institute, Sanghata Global and Village Capital to turn compassionate and capable young professionals into talent scouts and investment managers serving local entrepreneurs and social-minded investors in low-income and weak-capital regions of the world.

Pioneering Author & Advocate Myra Goodman of Earthbound Farm to Speak at CommencementMyra Goodman, co-founder with her husband Drew of Carmel Valley’s Earthbound Farm, one of the world’s leading organic growers, will be the featured speaker at the Monterey Institute’s spring 2012 commencement ceremony. The ceremony—scheduled for Saturday, May 19 on the front lawn of historic Colton Hall in downtown Monterey—will begin at 1:00 p.m. with the traditional processional, featuring flag-bearers marching down Pacific Street carrying the flags of each of the 33 countries represented in the graduating class of 309 students. Professor Peter Shaw Wins Leslie Eliason Excellence in Teaching AwardThe recipient of the seventh annual Leslie Eliason Excellence in Teaching Award is Professor Peter Shaw, a longtime faculty member in the Institute’s Teaching English to Speakers of Other Languages program. In the May 10 announcement, Provost Amy Sands noted Professor Shaw’s record of excellence in teaching and his ongoing, inspiring commitment to providing Monterey Institute students the highest quality education possible. Record Number of MIIS Students Awarded Prestigious Fulbright ScholarshipsSix students from the Monterey Institute will receive U.S. Fulbright scholarship awards for the 2012-2013 academic year, the most in the Institute’s 57-year history. This surpasses last year's record of five, which had MIIS students landing more U.S. Fulbrights on a per capita basis than every top-ten school in the 2012 U.S. News & World Report college rankings, with a higher applicant success rate than all but one of these leading schools. A seventh Fulbright applicant from the Monterey Institute is an alternate and may still be selected. MIIS Follies: Climate Change RapJessy Bradish is a dual degree student in the International Environmental Policy and Business Administration programs. She has a background in media and standup and wants to expand the climate change discussion in America through eco-comedy. She debuted her Climate Change Rap at the "MIIS Follies," our annual student-driven talent show. You can also watch the full version of her standup comedy and rap song. 25th Annual International Bazaar Showcases Diverse Cultures and Flavors of MIISFor 25 years students at the Monterey Institute of International Studies have joined together in groups to prepare and offer food representing their cultural heritage at the International Bazaar. Traditionally held in April, this cherished event always draws a large crowd, and this year was no exception, as over 300 Monterey Institute faculty, staff, students, friends and family members gathered for an event that truly showcases and celebrates the diverse cultures of MIIS. MIIS Ranks Third in Nation for Peace Corps Master’s International ParticipationThe Peace Corps and the Monterey Institute of International Studies announced today that the Monterey graduate school now ranks in a tie for third in the nation in terms of participation in the Peace Corps Master’s International program, with 26 students enrolled in the program and serving overseas as of the ranking date of September 30, 2011. |
