My Journey to MIIS

I am so excited to be making a career change, and getting a master's degree at MIIS has been an invaluable step in this journey. I can't imagine being anywhere else right now. Let me back up and tell you what has led me to Monterey.

My professional life has always been in theatre and music. I've been fortunate to perform around the world, and eventually I was ready to move to "the other side of the table" and became a musical theatre teacher and coach. I taught at Point Park University's Conservatory of Performing Arts as well as at various musical theatre companies around Pittsburgh, my hometown. I was having a blast, but I got to a point where I wanted to make my theatre career a hobby and pursue other passions.

Having spent time teaching English in Italy, Spain, Japan, and Nepal, I knew that being a part of language education programs was important to me. In addition, study abroad programs are, in my opinion, an essential part of the educational experience for students. I wanted to draw upon these passions and interests and move into a new career path. MIIS is the perfect fit for me with the TESOL master's program and a specialization in International Education Management.

I will be going into my third semester in the fall of 2015. Since coming to MIIS, I have had some incredible opportunities. I have developed a resource packet to help ESL teachers incorporate drama techniques and projects in their language classrooms which current Peace Corps Master's International students will be using in their upcoming service. I am also helping to plan the 2016 AAAL Conference in Orlando, Florida. And, I'm staying involved with theatre in my free time!

Language of Study

I keep up with my Spanish and Italian by taking free classes through B.U.I.L.D. on campus. These student-taught classes are a great way to keep up with your other languages in a low-pressure, stress-free way. No matter how busy I am with school, I make time to attend my Spanish and Italian classes -- they are just so much fun!

Student Life at MIIS

In addition to taking classes with B.U.I.L.D. and being a graduate assistant, I love taking part in the Student Council activities, which are a great way to spend time with my classmates and to meet students from the other programs!

My Favorite Things about Monterey

I love being on the water. Anytime you need a quick break to clear your head and get fresh air, you are never more than a few-minutes walk from the water! The recreation trail follows the contour of the bay, and you can see the incredible landscape and watch the marine mammals (harbor seals, sea lions, and sea otters) and birds (gulls, cormorants, and pelicans). It brings me great peace and joy! It's also fun to take pics of the gorgeous views and post them on Facebook, making my friends in the midwest and east coast jealous, especially when they're battling the winter!
