Though Thomas studied German in high school, he studied abroad in Russia while a student at Rice University. He spent a semester exploring both Siberia and Saint Petersburg while taking courses in anthropology. After returning from abroad, Thomas kept studying Russian until being commissioned in the navy. He worked on submarines for seven years, which helped him to discover his interest in nuclear nonproliferation.
Before coming to the Institute to specialize in nonproliferation policy in the MA in Nonproliferation and Terrorism Studies program, he went back to Siberia to brush up on his Russian. Now a pro in Russian and Nonproliferation issues, Thomas looks forward to a career with an international organization.
