Student Ambassador, MA International Education Management
My Journey to MIIS
Hello! Let me tell you a little about myself. I’m a first semester International Education Management (IEM) student, and I could not be happier to be here at the Monterey Institute of International Studies (MIIS)! (Seriously, no one is paying me to say that.)
I grew up in Madison, Wisconsin (go Packers!), where I lived until I came out to the West Coast for college. I earned a BA in French Studies and Psychology at Lewis & Clark College (L&C) in Portland, OR (go Pios!). During my time at L&C, I studied abroad in Strasbourg, France and had an amazing time. My experience was so meaningful, I decided that I wanted more. After graduating from L&C, I went back to France to be an English teaching assistant through the TAPIF program. That time, I was in Le Mans, teaching at a high school.
I learned a very important lesson as a teaching assistant: that I DO NOT want to be a teacher, but I DO want to work with students! So, when I returned to the U.S. (and back to Portland), I started trying to figure out how I was going to incorporate my love for developmental psychology, specifically adolescence and early adulthood, my love for language and my passion for meaningful travel abroad, and then I found International Education Management. When I read the program description, it was like the clouds parted. (Which, let me tell you is quite something— keep in mind I was living in Portland!) A few short months later, and here I am at the Monterey Institute.
Language of Study
My second language, and the one I’m studying here at MIIS, is French.
I do not yet know where I'd like to do my practicum (which will be Spring semester 2015), but I'd like to work in study abroad and would love the opportunity to work in a French-speaking country again.
My Favorite Things about Monterey
I’ve never lived in a place quite like Monterey, so in my free time, I love to walk or run along the coastal trail. The variety of flora here is also new to me, and I love seeing succulents I’ve never encountered before in my life.
How I’m Involved at MIIS
I’m one of the two IEM representatives to Student Council and the IEM Student Ambassador.
