Program: International Environmental Policy (2010)

Undergrad: University of California, Santa Cruz (USCS)
Monterey Institute alum, Alan Lovewell (MAIEP ‘10), was a presenter at the most recent 2012 TedxMonterey – Sea Change conference. As a presenter at this event he talked about how the ocean sustains, inspires, and defines his way of life. (Watch the full Ted talk here.) Alan grew up on the small island of Martha’s Vineyard. Surrounded by water he quickly learned to swim, dive, sail and fish for fun and for work. Growing up, he noticed how the oceans have changed over the years: there were less and less fish to catch.
After graduating from UCSC in Santa Cruz with his undergraduate degree, followed by time spent on the Sea of Cortez with the National Outdoor Leadership School as a sailing instructor, Alan decided to study Marine Policy at the Monterey Institute of International Studies. During Alan's time at MIIS, he participated in an International Professional Service Semester in Bali, Indonesia where he worked with three environmental NGOs - The Nature Conservancy, Conservation International, and the World Wildlife Fund for Nature. Alan says of his experience, "I gained more insight into the policy process within a developing nation and the interworkings of international environmental NGOs. The most impressive work these organizations are doing is science-based, analyzing the current state of ecosystems and threats. They are reaching out to communities and policy-makers to close the science gap."
Currently, Alan is a Sea Grant Fellow with NOAA’s Northwest Fishery Science Center and cofounder of Local Catch Monterey Bay, a community supported fishery that connects people with local fishermen for sustainable seafood. Alan hopes to continue in a career that promotes positive change for our oceans.
