A current member of the US Navy Reserves, Joel graduated from Chaminade University with a degree in political science and history. He has also studied the Spanish, Russian, and Arabic languages.
Joel originally intended to specialize in security studies until coursework in global politics and economics sparked his interest in international trade. He explored these subjects further by completing major term papers on the dynamics of the opium drug trade in Afghanistan.
