Fast Fact: As a staffer at the Arizona State Senate, Fareed directly worked on nearly 60 pieces of legislation.
“I set out to acquire the skills integral to being a successful policymaker.”
Fareed Bailey’s decision to pursue a master's degree in public administration stemmed primarily from his experiences gained in nearly three years of work in state government. While working at the Arizona Legislature, he was exposed to a multitude of policy issues with substantial human impact potential, ranging from transportation and air quality to business regulation.
“As a result of these experiences, I learned just how important it is to ensure that the various aspects of society be governed by sound, well-crafted public policy and how dangerous a poorly-crafted piece of public policy can be, if legally enacted. I thus set out to acquire the skills integral to being a successful policymaker, which has in turn led me to the MPA program at MIIS.”
In pursuit to find a graduate school that would be an ideal fit, the Monterey Institute stood out to Fareed because of its emphasis on teaching students how to be pragmatic problem solvers through immersive learning experiences.
“What I have enjoyed most about the MPA program at MIIS has been its flexible, interdisciplinary nature as well as the high caliber of instruction received from program faculty.”
Fareed is focusing his degree on environmental policy with an emphasis on natural resource management and energy use through elective coursework with the school's International Environmental Policy program.
Over the summer, Fareed had the opportunity to intern at the U.S. Energy Information Administration (EIA) in Washington, D.C. He says, “My summer internship has provided me with the ideal opportunity to apply the analytical tools and subject-matter competencies that I have acquired through my studies at MIIS in a professional, real-world setting.”
