MIIS Partners With Panetta Institute to Provide Invaluable Training for Students

February 24, 2011

The Panetta Institute Lecture Series kicked off on Monday, February 21 with a lecture featuring former Senator Alan Simpson and former White House Chief of Staff Erskine Bowles, co-chairs of the National Commission on Fiscal Responsibility and Reform, discussing the question “Is There a Fair Way to Reduce the Federal Deficit?” As part of the lecture series, the two distinguished guests and moderator Ron Insana of CNBC held a dialogue with students from Monterey Peninsula high schools and colleges.

Two Monterey Institute Spanish conference interpretation students seized on this invaluable training opportunity to simultaneously interpret the event. “Nothing can top the experience of being in a real-world interpreting environment,” says Professor Esther Navarro-Hall. “The Panetta Institute has provided not only that, but also the opportunity for our students to truly test their mettle.” This was both a very demanding and a personally satisfying experience for the students. Pablo Salvador Lopez (MACI ‘11) described the event as “A cordial, but lively, nuanced, but relevant, exchange rich in ideas and a pleasure to interpret.” His booth colleague Laura Merino (MACI ’11) added that “It was an honor and a pleasure to interpret for the Panetta Institute and CSUMB.”
