Welcome Letter from the Student Council
Dear New Students:
On behalf of the Student Council, I would like to welcome you all to the Monterey Institute of International Studies. My name is Britney Wehrfritz and I am the Student Council President for the 2012-2013 academic year. I am excited to lead the Student Council and to offer you the opportunity to play an active role in creating an environment that cultivates personal, academic, and professional growth.
The Student Council acts as a liaison between the student body and the administration and is responsible for voicing student opinions, organizing numerous events on campus, and supporting a variety of student clubs and initiatives. Student clubs contribute immensely to the richness of the Monterey Institute community. Currently there are many clubs on campus that provide an excellent opportunity to meet new students and discover new interests. You can find the most up-to-date list of clubs on our website at http://www.miis.edu/student-life/clubs. If you don’t see a club that represents your interests or ambitions, the Office of Student Services can assist you in the creation of a new club.
In addition, the Student Council leads a wide spectrum of programs and projects through our various committees. The Academic Affairs Committee, Social Activities Committees, Green Committee, IT Committee, and other ad-hoc Committees represent the voices of the student body on particular issues. Early in the fall semester, we will be holding nominations for the Student Council Executive Officer positions of Vice President and Secretary, as well as First-Year Program Representatives. Throughout the year, we sponsor and assist in organizing events on campus, all of which require dedicated volunteers. We maintain an open-door policy for Student Council meetings where all students are welcome to attend and be heard, and anyone is welcome to become an active committee member. There are plenty of opportunities to be involved and we encourage your participation, it is a great way to meet new people and get to know the community. The Student Council is also a great place to look for funding for your professional and academic development. We are responsible for Conference Funding, Club Funding, and Forum Funding. I hope you will take the opportunity to learn more about what we do and how we can help you improve your experience at MIIS during the orientation week Student Council Info Session.
I encourage all of you to contact me, or any member of the Student Council with questions or concerns. We have been chosen to represent you, and truly believe that we will function best if driven by a highly involved and vocal student body. Strong leadership is exceptionally important in a place as diverse as the Monterey Institute and we aim to actively address the wants and needs of our fellow students.
Once again, welcome to the Monterey Institute of International Studies. We in Student Council are looking forward to meeting you soon and we hope to enrich and enhance your experience here on the beautiful Pacific coast.
Best wishes,
Britney Wehrfritz
