Language Requirement

For Business and Policy Students

Advanced language study is a core component of the Monterey Institute's curriculum  All incoming business and policy students will be required to take a language placement test during orientation.  This placement test will determine which language class that a student will begin in prior to starting the three semesters of advanced language study while at MIIS.  Business and Policy students have a 12-unit advanced foreign language component as part of their degree program. It must be fulfilled by taking twelve credits in a single language.  For details, please see the Academic Policies and Accreditation manual.

It is important to understand that although we may have determined that you are at the right level at the time of your application, you should continue to work on your language skills in preparation for the program at The Monterey Institute.

If you have been required to take a preparation course prior to enrolling, or are interested in our summer intensive language programs, please select the appropriate option below:

Economics Requirement for Policy Students*

Policy students must have a background in micro- and macro-economics in order to take the International Economics course that is part of the core curriculum.  Although students are not required to satisfy the prerequisite before they begin their program, we do recommend that students take care of this as early as possible.  More information about the economics requirement and our intensive economics course can be found here.

*Note that MA in International Environmental Policy students are only required to have microeconomics.  MA in Nonproliferation and Terrorism Studies students do not have an economics requirement.

Tools of the Trade: Math and Science Preparation

Tools of the Trade is a two-week summer intensive course in science and math skills for incoming and continuing students. It is designed to provide the essential foundation that will allow students to optimally benefit from International Environmental Policy core course IPOL 8512 Quantitative Analysis for Environmental Science and Nonproliferation and Terrorism Studies gateway course IPOL 8559 WMD Science and Technology, as well as other courses in both programs requiring math and science skills.

Tools of the Trade is strongly recommended for students with limited background in chemistry, physics and math enrolled in the following degree programs:
