Types of Off-Campus Work Authorization for F-1 & J-1 Students

An international student in F-1 or J-1 status has the opportunity to receive temporary employment authorization to gain practical experience in his or her field of study. To obtain permission for this kind of employment, an F-1 student can apply for practical training authorization. In addition there is off-campus work authorization available for an F-1 students who is experiencing unforeseen and severe economic hardship. An international student in J-1 status is eligible to apply for Academic Training. 

  • Optional Practical Training: work authorization taken when you have completed your degree. One year of work authorization is available on OPT.
  • Curricular Practical Training: work authorization for employment that is related to to your program of study. 
  • Economic Hardship: works authorization for students who are having financial difficulty and can't find work on campus.
  • Academic Training: work authorization for international students in J-1 status.  Can be used during or after program for a total maximum of 12 months.
