Read below for information about applying for your visa.
The J-1 Exchange Visitor Program operates under the auspices of the United States Department of State Bureau of Educational and Cultural Affairs. The purpose of the Exchange Visitor Program is to increase mutual understanding between the people of the United States and the people of other countries by means of educational and cultural exchanges. Each Exchange Visitor Program has a program description under which that program must operate and designates an individual or individuals as the staff responsible for the administration of the particular J-1 program.
J-1 student status allows you to remain in the U.S. for the duration of your full-time academic program. To maintain J-1 student status, Exchange Students pursuing a Master's degree must be enrolled full-time during each fall and spring semester of their program. The J-1 student status permits you to work on-campus as a student employee and off-campus as part of academic training. You'll need to obtain permission from your J-1 sponsor prior to starting on-campus or off-campus employment.
To apply for a J-1 visa and to enter the U.S. as a J-1 student, you must obtain a Form DS-2019 from the Monterey Institute of International Studies. To obtain the DS-2019, complete the DS-2019 Application.
A completed DS-2019 Application is required in order to demonstrate your ability to pay tuition and living expenses. The Monterey Institute is required per U.S. federal regulations to confirm sufficient financial resources for your full academic program. These costs include tuition, fees, health insurance and the estimated cost of living.
You can read more about the cost of attendance before filling out your DS-2019 Application. It is important to note that the DS-2019 Application is required for all exchange visitors who are requesting an J-1 visa status for study at the Monterey Institute.
Please follow the visa checklist, and fill out your DS-2019 Application carefully. Incomplete information will result in your CFR and I-20 application being returned to you and will delay the process time for your visa.
