Strategic Plan

Strategic Plan | Executive Summary

The Middlebury/ Monterey partnership is something unique in our day and age: an undergraduate school with an excellent reputation coming together with a graduate school that offers complementary, yet separate, educational opportunities for its students.

If you look at Middlebury’s strategic plan, it mentions the Monterey Institute, and Monterey’s new strategic plan mentions Middlebury. We’re taking each other into wide-ranging opportunities. We’re committed to going there together, in the synergies that can be created between undergraduate and graduate education, including the Middlebury Language Schools, Schools Abroad, and Bread Loaf schools, when both share a global focus.

This is what we envisioned when we began working together on this partnership! Now we’re taking that to the next step.

The Monterey Institute Strategic Plan

"This is a historic moment of transformation for the Monterey Institute..."

So declares the new strategic plan for the Monterey Institute of International Studies, adopted by its Board of Trustees on October 16, 2006. Over the next four years, the half-century-old Monterey Institute will build on its new affiliation with Middlebury College of Vermont to achieve new levels of academic excellence, sustainable financial strength, and greater worldwide impact in language learning and services.

Developed by a team appointed last January by President Clara Yu, the plan for reinventing the Monterey Institute at a pivotal point in its history builds on thousands of hours of collaborative effort and on input from Institute-wide open forums, informal meetings, conversations with community members, and student-led interviews of students, faculty, and staff.

Underpinning the plan's interlinked strategies is the Middlebury affiliation and "the unyielding commitment that we share with our affiliated partner to international education, language proficiency, cultural understanding, interdisciplinary teaching, and informed global citizenry."

The Institute’s strategy outlines a process for transformation by 2010, work that is well underway. The strategic plan also sets a lasting vision. "In the long term," the plan forecasts, "the Monterey Institute will be widely recognized as ... the institution that unites visionaries and pragmatists, builds bridges across cultural and national boundaries, and changes the world through networked global professionals."
