After Berkeley, I went to Portugal and trained horses. But after two years I said “I don’t want to be training horses all my life.” I called my mentor, my high school English teacher, and told her I wanted to get into international relations. I was looking at Columbia and Johns Hopkins. She said “Go to the Monterey Institute. That’s the place to be.

Upon arriving at the Monterey Institute, students are struck by its informality and friendliness. With approximately 750 students and 70 full-time resident faculty, the Institute is a close-knit, welcoming community. Faculty and staff are readily available to meet with students, and students themselves are eager to share their experiences. Most students and faculty have studied or worked abroad and are receptive to new people and new views. Amidst the stunning physical beauty of the central California coast, this atmosphere of openness and active connection with the environment is a dimension of the Monterey experience that remains with Institute graduates for many years.
One of the friendliest spots on campus is the Student Affairs Office. It serves as the center for non-academic student activities and issues, including local housing information, student health insurance, medical and counseling referrals, Student Council and Student Clubs, on- and off-campus activities and recreational equipment for loan, and other local resources. For more information on these resources, please access the different pages of this site.
