The Monterey Institute does not have dormitories or on-campus housing, as our graduate students have traditionally preferred to live in independent housing in an off-campus setting. Approximately one-half of our students live in rental units located within walking distance of campus; others live a short drive or bus ride away. The Student Affairs Office maintains an exclusive short-term rental database and an exclusive long-term rental database of available rentals and, provides students with additional resources they need to conduct a successful housing search.
Once a student has been admitted to our MA program and/or Summer Language program, and has paid his/her deposit, we can facilitate access to the databases by providing a login and password. For more information, please call the Student Affairs Office 831.647.4128 or you can email us at: student.affairs@miis.edu. Monterey offers a wide variety of housing situations which include: rooms in private homes, houses shared with other students, shared apartments, and private apartments with one or more bedrooms or with one all-purpose room (studio). Both furnished and unfurnished housing is available.
California is known throughout the world as a very desirable place to live and over the past few years there has been a good deal of publicity about the scarcity and expense of housing in the state. The Monterey area has certainly experienced a tightening in available housing and prices have increased over the past few years, but this has not prevented our students from finding safe and comfortable housing. It does take effort and perseverance, but staying flexible in their thinking has allowed more than 90% of new Institute students to find housing within three to five days after arriving in Monterey.
