Begun in 2001, this international collaborative research project examines the growing cross-border human migration within Northeast Asia, the response of the host communities and national governments concerned, and the implications for the human security of the border-crossing individuals as well as the members of the host communities.
Researchers from China, Japan, Mongolia, Russia, South Korea, and the United States are conducting research into the following topics:
- Population trends and migration patterns in the region
- Chinese and Koreans in the Russian Far East
- North Koreans in China
- Chinese, Koreans, and Russians in Japan
- Immigration and emigration issues in Mongolia and South Korea
The project’s findings highlight various types and severity of problems, ranging from national security concerns to diplomatic problems, national migration policy dilemmas, and social tension and cultural frictions at the local level. The project is jointly sponsored by the United Nations University, Tokyo and the Monterey Institute of International Studies Center for East Asian Studies. Various parts of the project have been supported by generous grants from the United States Institute of Peace, the United Nations University, and the Freeman Foundation. The project is co-directed by Dr. Tsuneo Akaha and Dr. Anna Vassilieva.
The project has produced the book: Tsuneo Akaha and Anna Vassilieva, eds., Crossing National Borders: Human Migration Issues in Northeast Asia, Tokyo: United Nations University Press, 2005. The book includes contributions by Robert A. Scalapino, Tsuneo Akaha, Anna Vassilieva, Maurice D.
