Visiting Fellows


In recent years the following visiting fellows were hosted by CEAS to conduct research, give seminars, or undertake academic training at the Monterey Institute of International Studies.
  • Dr. Hashbat Hulan, Advisor to the Mongolian Minister of Education, Culture, and Sciences; Former Member of the Mongolian Parliament -- to give a seminar on "Migration Issues in Mongolia" and guest lectures on "Mongolia's Foreign Policy Challenges" and "Mongolia and Russia"
  • Tomoyoshi Nakajima, Associate Senior Economist, Economic Research Institute for Northeast Asia, Niigata, Japan -- to give a seminar on "East Asian FTA and Japanese Agricultural Reform."
  • Irina Ivakhniouk, Department of Population, Faculty of Economics, Moscow State Lomonosov University, Moscow -- to give a seminar on "Migration Flows between Russia and China: Challenges to National Policies and Security" and lectures on "Prospects for Regionalism in Northeast Asia: From the Perspective of Demography" and "Recent Shifts in Migration Patterns between Central Asia and Russia."
  • Mr. Shoichi Itoh, Senior Researcher, Economic Research Institute for Northeast Asia, Niigata, Japan -- to conduct research on energy security and cooperation in Northeast Asia with a focus on Russia
  • Dr. Zhanna Zayonchkovskaya, Director, Migration Laboratory, Institute for Economic Forecasting, Russian Academy of Sciences, Moscow -- to give two lectures, on "Demographic and Migration Challenges in Russia" and "Migration Issues in Russia's Relations with Central Asia."
  • Dr. Daojiong Zha, Associate Professor, Renmin University of China, Beijing -- to give a lecture on "Chinese Migrants in Japan."
  • Dr. Miranda Schreurs, Associate Professor, University of Maryland, College Park, Maryland -- to give a lecture on "Environmental Policy Challenges and Regional Cooperation in Northeast Asia."
  • Dr. Pavel Minakir, Director, Economic Research Institute, Russian Academy of Sciences Far Eastern Branch, Khabarovsk -- to give a lecture on "Russia and Northeast Asian Economies."
  • Dr. Mitsuhiro Mimura, Researcher, Economic Research Institute for Northeast Asia, Niigata, Japan -- to research American views on North Korea
  • Dr. Vladimir Kucheryavenko, Researcher, Economic Research Institute, Russian Academy of Sciences Far Eastern Branch, Khabarovsk -- to research the Russian Far East's role in Russia's economic relations with Northeast Asian countries
  • Juichi Inada, Professor of International Political Economy at the School of International Economics, Senshu University, Japan -- to conduct research on Japan's role in post-conflict reconstruction and Japan's ODA policy
  • Tamara Troyakova, Researcher, Institute of History, Archaeology, and Ethnology of the Far Eastern Peoples, Russian Academy of Sciences, Vladivostok, Russia -- to conduct a comparative study of the experience of indigenous and other ethnic minorities in California and the Russian Far East
  • Takanori Oji, Professor, Yokohama Shoka University, Tokyo -- to conduct research on US policy towards Taiwan and to teach courses in Japanese and Chinese on the Politics of PRC
  • Seiichi Kubota, Senior Researcher, Asahi Shimbun, Tokyo -- to conduct research on OJ Simpson trials and other topics of interest to the Japanese newspaper's readership, and to teach a course on Japanese journalism
  • Sergei Leonov, Senior Researcher, Economic Research Institute, Russian Academy of Sciences, Khabarovsk, Russia -- to conduct research on Russia's economic relations with Asia-Pacific countries
  • Guo Jialiang, Research Scientist, State Oceanic Administration of China, Tianjin, PRC -- to conduct research on US law of the sea policy
  • Tan Xinjiao, Program Officer, State Oceanic Administration of China, Tianjin, PRC -- to undergo training in international ocean environmental studies
  • Alexandra Kropotova, International Research Exchange Board office, Vladivostok, Russia -- to undergo training in international ocean environmental studies
  • Nau Samnang, Deputy Director of the Cabinet, Ministry of Environment, Phnom Penh, Cambodia -- to undergo training in international ocean environmental studies
  • Toru Kajiwara, Japanese Embassy, London -- to conduct research on East Asian security and arms control issues
  • Li Yonghui, Chinese Academy of Social Sciences, Beijing, PRC -- co conduct research on Chinese migration in Northeast Asia.
