Social Security Numbers & Taxes

If you are temporarily in the U.S. in F-1 or J-1 status to attend an educational program and, if you are authorized to work and meet the specific eligibility requirements set down by the Social Security Administration, you will need to obtain a Social Security Number (SSN). The SSN is used to report your wages to the government.

In order to apply for a SSN, you need to complete an Application for a Social Security Card (Form SS-5) and present original documents establishing your immigration status, work eligibility, age, and identity to the local Social Security Office. For more information, please contact the Office of International Services.
