After Berkeley, I went to Portugal and trained horses. But after two years I said “I don’t want to be training horses all my life.” I called my mentor, my high school English teacher, and told her I wanted to get into international relations. I was looking at Columbia and Johns Hopkins. She said “Go to the Monterey Institute. That’s the place to be.
