Technology plays a serious role in each graduate student's educational experience at the Monterey Institute. Students are encourage to consider technology as a professional tool, to be used beyond the classroom, to each student a competitive edge upon graduation. Over two thirds of entering students bring laptop computers to the Institute to take advantage of our state-of-the-art wireless campus network.
Whether taking notes in the classroom, doing Internet research for papers and projects in the library, performing translation and interpretation exercises in the multimedia classrooms, or simply checking email and using other campus resources while enjoying a coffee on the Samson Center patio, our students realize the convenience of making their educational experience mobile.
IT Services provides a number of resources to faculty, staff and students.
- IT Services maintains several computer labs on campus. In addition to these, there are numerous computer and audio-video enhanced classrooms. Facilities on campus include instructional classrooms specifically designed for translation and interpretation, the Max Kade Language Technology Center, and research computers in the William Tell Coleman Library. Support for these facilities is centralized through the Lab Support Center.
- Wireless access points are found in all major classrooms on campus. Additional access points provide wireless services in the William Tell Coleman Library, the Samson Student Center, the Irvine Auditorium, the Holland Study Area, and the CNS research center. Support for these wireless services are provided through the Wireless Laptop Support Center.
- Faculty can consult with IT staff to help identify and develop uses for IT applications in their academic work. Annual faculty development workshops are also provided.
- Additionally, many classrooms include data projection and computer equipment for use in class. Audio-video services include audio, video and equipment checkout for use in classroom and practice exercises. Support for audio-video services is provided by the Audio-Video Center.
- Students, faculty and staff connect to email services through the First Class email system. Connections can be maintained to First Class by using client software, or by web-based sessions. First Class includes conference services, allowing students and faculty to share class information in a secure environment.
- IT Services staff includes people who provide full-time help-desk services, hardware and software support, and training workshops in a wide variety of software applications. IT Services also maintains the campus Windows network, a high-capacity Internet connection, and various other services; including student printing, dial-in and proxy services for attaching to library research databases from off campus.
