The MIIS wireless network is a Cisco network that supports IEEE 802.11g, 802.11b and 802.11a standards. The network consists of forty access points which provide wireless coverage to most indoor and some outdoor areas on campus. MIIS students, faculty, and staff can enjoy mobility and flexibility by accessing their emails, Internet, Intranet, and MIIS network resources from their wireless laptop computers.
Scope of Support
The Wireless Laptop Support Center (WLSC) provides limited technical assistance to the students, staff and faculty. Services are in support of the user's personal laptop/notebook computers. These services include:
- MIIS wireless setup
- General wireless computing and networking troubleshooting
- Network Printer installation/setup
- Avast! 4Home Edition anti-virus installation
- FirstClass email client setup
- Enabling full internal network connectivity (optional)
WLSC Location and Hours
The WLSC is located in Casa Fuente 438A (Pacific Street level). Regular open hours are: Monday through Friday from 9:00 am to 5:00 pm. Hours may change based on support staff availability and school academic calendar. In order to guarantee WLSC availability, appointments are strongly recommended. To make an appointment for services, please visit the WLSC or call 831-647-6546.
Students who already own laptops without wireless network cards (adapters) should purchase a wireless network card prior to setting up an appointment with the WLSC. These cards are available from various vendors in the Monterey area such as PC People and Circuit City, or from online computer stores such as http://www.microwarehouse.com/. Prices vary depending on the manufacturer, location, or model you purchase.
To purchase computers and network cards in advance, the following specifications are compatible with the campus network:
- IEEE 802.11b, IEEE 802.11g, and IEEE 802.11a standards with WPA support
- Windows XP Professional operating system with SP2 or Windows Vista
- Mac Airport with OS 10.4 and up
Some older network wireless cards and operating systems may not support the WPA security. It is highly recommended that you have an updated wireless card and operating system to take advantage of the new secured network. If you have an older wireless card, you may check with the card’s or computer’s manufacturer to see if there is an updated firmware or software driver for your card that supports WPA. Also, if you use Windows XP, make sure you have Windows updated to SP2. For Mac users, you will need to have your Airport driver updated as well as having your OS patches updated.
We must configure your wireless card in order to work with the MIIS wireless network. The configuration instructions are available on the Moodle website and in FirstClass, in the Wireless folder, under the User2user conference. For further assistance, please visit the Wireless Laptop Support Center. A valid MIIS network account is required for setting up the MIIS wireless connection on laptops.
Wireless users on campus can print from any of the designated student printers on campus. These printers are located in CF448 (Pacific Street level) in the Casa Fuente Building, in the Library (Van Buren Street), and in the Kade Technology Center (Pierce Street).
Students using the wireless network at the computer labs may use the Student Printers in CF448 or in the Kade Center. Students using laptops in other parts of the campus may choose to have jobs printed to the Library, which has longer evening and weekend hours.
A current printer driver must be installed on the laptop for each of the designated four printers which the student desires to print from. Printer installation instructions are available in the Wireless Laptop Support Center, on the Moodle website and in First Class, in the Wireless folder, under the User2user conference. If you need assistance please visit the WLSC. A valid MIIS network account is required for the printer setup.
Updated antivirus software is required for any laptop connecting the campus wireless network. If you do not already have a working copy of antivirus software installed on your laptop, please purchase a commercial version of antivirus software, or request help installing free anti-virus software such as the free avast! 4 Home edition. We also recommend that students not purchase and install bundles of security software, such as Norton Internet Security, Norton 360 or the McAfee suite, limiting their security software instead just to antivirus software.
You will need to register the free 4 Home edition of avast! to receive virus signature updates, and you may be requested to re-register this product periodically to continue updates.
