Professor David Wick of the Middlebury Institute recently received the Inclusive Excellence in Teaching award at the Global Inclusion 2023 conference in Chicago.

“Receiving this encouragement for work that brings me so much joy is incredible,” said Professor Wick, a faculty member in the Institute’s MA in International Education Management program. “My heart is so full.”

The award is one of several awards bestowed annually by Diversity Abroad, which supports educators, policymakers, and others in advancing diversity, equity, and inclusion in international education. Wick has been involved with the organization since its founding.

“David has long been a leader in the push for inclusion, belonging, and social justice in the international education field,” said his faculty colleague, Professor Katherine Punteney. “At the Institute, David has analyzed how individuals from marginalized communities can best be supported and has changed processes in ways that have produced tangibly positive effects. The International Education Management program faculty, staff, and students are delighted to see Dr. Wick’s contributions to the field recognized with this prestigious award.”

“When I joined the faculty at MIIS, bringing perspectives and courses on equity, diversity, and inclusion in international education was my central focus. Since then, we have refined our curriculum to center on these topics,” said Wick. “To receive this recognition is a powerful reminder that the International Education Management program’s strategic direction is relevant and timely.”

At the awards ceremony, many Middlebury Institute alumni and students who have worked with Wick through the Future Nobel Laureates Scholarship program celebrated his recognition. Wick expressed his appreciation for his students.

“You are my best teachers. You inspire and motivate me to keep striving to create and sustain learning spaces in which all have what they deserve to thrive and grow into their best selves. I know that through challenging each other we cocreate the communities, knowledges, tools, and fortitude to keep reimagining and refining global learning experiences to move ever closer to their potential for advancing humanization, liberation, equity, and social justice.”
