Student and staff researchers at the Middlebury Institute’s Center for Nonproliferation Studies identified sites in China suspected of being launch sites for spy balloons.

A team of student and staff researchers at the Middlebury Institute’s Center for Nonproliferation Studies is again at the forefront of global security issues.

Through satellite imagery, the open source intelligence (OSINT) group identified a likely site for launching spy balloons on China’s Hainan Island off its southern coast. Rolling Stone interviewed graduate research assistant Sam Lair, a 2024 nonproliferation and terrorism studies (NPTS) candidate, and researcher Eli Hayes. The team also included Tricia White MANPTS ’23,  and Michael Duitsman MANPTS ’15, a research associate.
