Alex Newhouse MANPTS ’18, deputy director of the Institute’s Center on Terrorism, Extremism, and Counterterrorism (CTEC), told NPR’s Leila Fadel that the profile of the Highland Park, Illinois, shooter is similar to those he has seen in recent mass shootings in which the shooter does not appear to be driven by politics or ideology. Rather, the suspect fits the profile of someone immersed in the fringes of certain Internet communities, including what researchers call “alternate reality games.”

Researchers at the Center on Terrorism, Extremism, and Counterterrorism will partner with the game company iThrive Games Foundation on a two-year project funded by the Department of Homeland Security.
