Alex Newhouse MANPTS ’18, deputy director of the Institute’s Center on Terrorism, Extremism, and Counterterrorism (CTEC), told NPR’s Leila Fadel that the profile of the Highland Park, Illinois, shooter is similar to those he has seen in recent mass shootings in which the shooter does not appear to be driven by politics or ideology. Rather, the suspect fits the profile of someone immersed in the fringes of certain Internet communities, including what researchers call “alternate reality games.”
