Garden at MIIS
The Institute has a community garden where students can grow fruits, vegetables, and flowers—or just relax.

Middlebury Institute provides students with a wide array of tools they need to succeed in their studies and thrive in their personal lives. Here are some of the top resources.

1. Funding for Professional Development, Community Initiatives, Student Clubs, and Emergencies

Attending conferences and doing internships are great ways to learn more about your future career and connect with professionals already working in your dream job. Experiential Learning Funding is available for students to use for a variety of immersive learning experiences. This includes offsetting the cost of attending conferences. If you have an internship that is unpaid or minimally paid, you can also apply for funding. Projects or initiatives related to your degree can also be partly subsidized, as long as you develop a clear and concrete plan. Past examples include seed planting, industry publications, and starting the nonprofit organization Translators for Elders.

Student Services also provides funding for student clubs on an ad hoc basis. Check our list of existing student clubs or start a new one! Students can also request Community Initiatives Funding to host a large-scale event such as a speaker, panel, conference, or community gathering. These kinds of events are a great way to provide thought-provoking and insightful perspectives on international topics and bring students together with leading experts and professionals to share knowledge and experiences.

In the event that a student is facing an emergency that could negatively impact their ability to complete their studies, they can apply for funding from the Student Emergency Fund.

2. Online Doctor Appointments and Counseling

TimelyCare provides 24/7, on-demand access to medical providers who can treat a wide range of common illnesses, mental health professionals, licensed counselors, and health coaching with a nutrition specialist. There is also self-care content such as yoga and meditation. Simply log in with your Middlebury account on your phone or device to get started!

3. Career Coaching

The experienced team at the Center for Advising and Career Services (CACS) is always ready to help you at every point in your career: when you first arrive at the Institute, searching for an internship, job hunting before graduation, and even after graduation!

Don’t miss the Career Management workshop offered every semester. This interactive, half-day course gives you hands-on opportunities to practice career management skills. If it doesn’t work with your schedule, be sure to make an appointment with career advisors and attend events throughout the year.

Did you know that MIIS Career Services has a YouTube channel? You can watch a recording of the résumé workshop to get a preview of the course. Get inspired and get tips from recent graduates and alumni on the Career Insights blog. You can also search for jobs and internships through Handshake and Interstride (accessed through Handshake Resources), which has search filters that are useful for international students, such as jobs by visa requirements.

4. One-on-One Writing Help

Tutors at the Graduate Writing Center can help you outline your paper at the beginning of the assignment, build your editing skills, and help you analyze feedback on past assignments so you can become a more self-sufficient writer. If you’d like tutors to edit a finished paper, be sure to send it to them at least 24 hours in advance so they have time to look over it carefully! Book a one-on-one appointment via Outlook.

5. Sports Equipment, Cooking and Baking Supplies, Games, and More

Physical health is also important for graduate students! The McGowan Wellness Space (MG215) is equipped with ‌basic equipment such as yoga mats and kettlebells. There’s even a Bluetooth speaker you can play music on! You can visit the Wellness Space between 7:00 a.m. and 7:00 p.m. on weekdays. You can also rent outdoor sports equipment such as volleyballs and frisbees from Student Services. If you like cooking and baking, we have you covered; you can also check out baking sheets, BBQ equipment, and even a karaoke machine. You can also check out the Institute’s Costco card for a day. For more information on checking out equipment, take a look at the on-campus section of the Community Discounts and Checkout page. You can also check out board games and DVDs from our library.

6. Discounts on Local Fitness Centers, Restaurants, Bus Passes, and More

Many local businesses welcome students with community discounts, including gyms and yoga studios and restaurants. Several fitness centers provide free class passes that you can pick up at Student Services to try them out before you commit to a membership. You can also get a discounted bus pass for Monterey-Salinas Transit, which is especially useful for students who commute to campus. Be sure to visit the Monterey Bay Aquarium, which offers student discounts on membership.

7. Financial Counseling

On the iGrad financial literacy platform, students can track their financial stress score, take online financial literacy courses, and search for scholarships. Topics the financial literacy courses cover include understanding credit scores, buying or leasing a car, planning for retirement, and paying off student loans.

8. Full Digital Access to the Economist, the Wall Street Journal, the New York Times, and the Washington Post

It’s important for all students to keep up with the latest news around the world and apply that knowledge to their studies. Students at the Institute can get full digital access to a range of publications.

9. Professional Software

Students can use a variety of software on their personal computers free of charge while enrolled at the Institute, including the full Microsoft Office 365 suite and Adobe Creative Cloud suite. Students also have access to language industry–leading software such as Trados Studio, MemoQ, and Phrase to start building familiarity with the tools they will need in their future careers.

10. Library Research Guides and Databases

Our librarians have put together numerous research guides to help students find articles, books, and other resources relevant to their areas of study. There are also guides about intercultural competence, LGBTQIA+, and more. The library has DVDs in 14 languages, and in the language study research guides you can find selected films that are available at the library if you want to supplement your language learning that way. Through the library, Institute students also have access to more than 145 databases, which are vital for cultivating awareness of world issues as well as helping with class-related research and projects.

11. Our Green Thumb Garden

Our Green Thumb Garden is a student-led organic community garden located on Van Buren Street next to the Morse Building. Students can sign up for a plot, where they can grow flowers, vegetables, or anything they like! There are also picnic tables and a hammock, so it’s a great place to study or relax.
