The Graduate School of Language and Educational Linguistics (GSLEL) teaches languages, and prepares language teachers with knowledge of linguistics and pedagogy required for the teaching of any language, including English as a second language. Coursework includes skill-building for writing, conversation, and public speaking; “content” classes that develop knowledge of specialized vocabulary and concepts for professional practice; preparation in methodology and curriculum design; and second language learning, among other areas.
Dean Ruth Larimer:
"The Graduate School of Language and Educational Linguistics is an exciting place to be right now, and a very worthy place to support — because language education means so much to our country and to the world today.
"Events of recent years have sounded a wakeup call. We need to communicate, and we cannot always assume that we can communicate in English around the world. Language learning and skillful linguistic education are of paramount importance, and no one anywhere does it better than the GSLEL at the Monterey Institute.
"We prepare outstanding teachers of English as a second language and teachers of foreign language; we also provide exciting, stimulating language classes to students from the Institute’s other disciplines and programs. More and more, we are developing new, off-site, online, and custom-designed ways to deliver the first-rate language learning for which our school is renowned.
"Your gift to the GSLEL can provide financial aid for international or U.S. students here; it can help us develop new, 'outside-the-box' means of delivering more language learning to more learners; and it can help our faculty build cutting-edge knowledge and research on how language can be learned and taught most powerfully. Most importantly, your gift helps to build communication and understanding across a world that needs it, today, more than ever before."
