My passion for the Monterey Institute is grounded in the fact that it really kicked off a very fulfilling career in international affairs and international business. It is a very special place. It is innovative, diverse, and brings together great people, many of whom have remained my friends throughout the years. The Institute is one of the few places in the world where you can really get a flavor for international collaboration on complex issues across cultures. In a global world, you need to be able to work with professionals from other cultures, whether in corporations, governments and non-profits, with vastly different backgrounds, professional goals and value systems more than anything. The Institute is a great training ground for that. Olaf J. Groth, Ph.D. GSIPS (BA '92, MA '93) and member of Board of International Advisors. The Graduate School of International Policy Studies (GSIPS) trains leaders in economic development, international government, and environmental policy.
Dean Edward J. Laurance:
"One of the most exciting, rewarding aspects of teaching at the Graduate School of International Policy Studies is knowing that we make a real difference in the world, both in our own work and in what our students go on to do. By supporting our work here at the GSIPS, you join in generating positive impacts and solution-oriented results. You become an important part of work being done all over the world, every single day.
"Many IPS graduates use their training to promote economic renewal and equity in developing nations. This past summer, I traveled through Africa, visiting a dozen Institute alumni and students engaged in economic development work. It was deeply energizing to see these people — four, five, and ten years after their graduation — doing fantastic work in a region of the world where there is such a huge need.
"What sets us apart as a school is the usable, professional skill-set we develop in a context of highly accomplished language and cross-cultural fluency. GSIPS alumni carry the skills and expertise not only to understand policy issues, but actually to do something about them. Our faculty is engaged in both research and project work that has genuine impact on international problem-solving.
"Supporting our work together is, quite simply, a way of generating positive change that will go on growing and expanding for years and years to come."
