Les Zambo Endowed Scholarship Fund

Professor Les Zambo, (1941-2003)

The History of the Fund

The Les Zambo Endowed Scholarship Fund was established in 2004 to further Les Zambo’s commitment to providing students with quality international education. Les was a beloved professor who served more than 20 years in the Institute’s MBA program before his unexpected passing in 2003. He joined the Institute in 1984 as a full-time Professor of International Finance. He served as Dean of the MBA Program from 1991-1994, and was the founder of the Institute’s Business and Economic Center. He was recognized for his teaching excellence with the Fisher 5.0 Award and was often nominated for the outstanding teaching award at the Institute.

The Les Zambo Scholarship is awarded to deserving students who have been in the Fisher School MBA Program for at least one semester. Each year, the scholarship fund makes awards to outstanding students with financial need who are planning a career in international finance and/or accounting. Criteria for selection include academic performance, commitment to the field, collegiality, and service to the School and the Institute. The Scholarship furthers Professor Zambo’s commitment to sending students out into the world well-informed, prepared in business, and equipped with integrity and a sense of humor.

Meet the 2011-2012 Zambo Scholars

Seungho Lee (이승호), MBA’12

A second year MBA student from South Korea, Seungho Lee is creatingSuengho Lee 2011-2012 Zambo Scholar new paths for MIIS students. Whereas many MIIS graduates' activities and careers are concentrated on western countries, Seungho is planning to be an international finance expert in the Asian region in part because of his strong communication skills in Korean, Japanese, English, and Chinese. "Asian countries offer huge emerging markets and I hope many MIIS alumni will get great opportunities in those regions. I believe that is the opportunity the professor Zambo meant to give to students with this scholarship."

For Seungho, the Zambo scholarship will provide financial support that will help him prepare for the series of international certificates he is planning to take, especially the CFA (Charted Financial Analyst). After graduation, Seungho plans to create his career as a financial analyst who specializes in Asian business.

Kevin Morenzi, MBA/MAIEP'11

Kevin Morenzi 2011-2012 Zambo Scholar

Kevin Morenzi grew up in New York City with aspirations of serving in the Peace Corps and following an international career in environmental conservation and development.  Kevin served for 3 ½ years in rural Bolivia as a Peace Corps volunteer, but when he returned to the United States with his wife and daughter, he found his interests swayed more toward the environmental financial markets.  Kevin started working for a carbon credit firm called EcoSecurities where he worked as a Finance Manager and studied finance and accounting in the evenings.  He then decided to attend the Institute to enhance his academic credentials by combining his passion for international work, environmental finance, and business administration.  His future goals include working with environmental finance mechanisms to curb global greenhouse gas emissions.

Receiving the Zambo Scholarship award is among the highlights of his time at MIIS and an unparalleled honor.  This award helps tremendously to ease the financial burden of paying for graduate school, but more importantly, it is an honor to be selected as Zambo scholarship recipient among his distinguished and equally deserving colleagues.
