GIVING TO THE INSTITUTE

President's Message | Provost's Message

I was a "headhunter" with the largest global executive-search firm, and early in my career it became very clear to me that the ability to understand different cultures hinges on your ability to speak those languages. When I became involved with the Monterey Institute, my first thought was, "Here's a place that solves that problem."

It isn't just that we teach basic languages; students here are enhancing and using a second, third, sometimes a fourth and fifth language to be better citizens of the world. And they're combining that ability to speak and negotiate with the knowledge they need to perform successfully in a foreign environment. For me, that's very exciting.

President's Message

Like all institutions of higher learning, the Monterey Institute of International Studies depends on donor support to continue its work. Tuition and fees do not cover the full cost of a Monterey education — donor support is especially vital for the $4 million that we provide annually in financial aid for our students. We turn to individuals, families, foundations, and businesses who share the Institute's ideals for sustaining support.

Entering our second half-century, strengthened by our affiliation with Middlebury College, the Monterey Institute is in the right place, at the right time, to have a uniquely powerful, positive, long-term global impact. We ask you to join us in making this happen.

President Clara Yu:
"The most important reason why I decided to come to the Monterey Institute is because everyone here — and I really mean everyone! — understands the Institute's mission and believes in it with an inspiring passion. This mission defines who we are here, and why our work matters so much.

"We believe that multilingual competence and deep multicultural understanding must be the basis for human interaction and problem-solving in the globalized 21st century. We educate students to build practical skills for a lifetime of meaningful work in an international field. Monterey Institute alumni have the knowledge, the understanding, the hands-on experience, and the toolbox of skills to do something useful, successful, and good in the world.

"And does our world ever need people like this! This may well be humankind's most critical century. From energy and environmental issues to the interchange of cultures and commodities and the clash of civilizations, we face complex, global challenges. These challenges can only be addressed internationally, by knowledgeable people who can talk with each other, work with each other, and understand each other. These are the people we are educating at the Monterey Institute.

"Your gift to the Monterey Institute, whatever its form and scale, will have far-reaching impacts. We make the most of every dollar, and our graduates are all over the world making the most of their Monterey Institute education. I invite you to join me in the decision to make a difference for the world, and for the future we share, by supporting the Monterey Institute of International Studies."
