How to Apply

Complete the FAFSA

The basic application used to apply for financial aid at any school in the nation is called the FAFSA: Free Application for Federal Student Aid. This application is used to apply for federal, state, and institutional sources of financial aid. If you choose not to apply online, you may obtain a paper FAFSA directly from the Monterey Institute of International Studies or by calling the U.S. Department of Education directly at 1-800-4-FED-AID (1-800-433-3243). The Monterey Institute’s Title IV school code is: 001241. Be sure to list the Monterey Institute of International Studies when completing Step 6 of the FAFSA.

We recommend completion of the FAFSA prior to March 15th (Summer and Fall) or October 1st (Spring)

If you fill out a paper FAFSA, do NOT mail it to the Monterey Institute.  You should mail your form to:

Federal Student Aid Programs
PO Box 7001
Mt. Vernon, IL 62864-0071

Students who file their FAFSA by the deadlines recommended above, and who demonstrate the most financial need will be given priority for financial aid funding.  For applications received after the March 15th and October 1st deadlines, financial aid award will consist of the remaining available funds, so be sure to apply early for consideration for the best financial aid awards we have to offer.

Review your Student Aid Report (SAR) and make any necessary corrections

Approximately four weeks after you file your FAFSA, the U.S. Department of Education will send you a Student Aid Report (SAR), summarizing the information reported on your application. Review your SAR carefully for any errors upon receipt, and make any necessary corrections. If any of the information on your application has changed, follow the instructions on the SAR to make corrections and return it to the address provided. Be sure the Monterey Institute of International Studies (School Code: 001241) is listed as an institution authorized to receive your application information. If no updates or corrections are required, keep the SAR for your reference. DO NOT MAIL YOUR SAR TO THE MONTEREY INSTITUTE: KEEP IT FOR YOUR RECORDS.  The Office of Student Financial Planning will receive an electronic version of your FAFSA data, so we do not need your SAR.

If you do not receive your SAR within four weeks, call 1-800-4-FED-AID (1-800-433-3243) to check the status of your FAFSA application processing.

Once we receive your FAFSA information, you will receive an e-mail from the Office of Student Financial Planning (OSFP) with a link where you can download our internal financial aid application.

NOTE:  IT IS IMPORTANT THAT WHEN YOU COMPLETE THE FAFSA, YOU INCLUDE AN EMAIL ADDRESS THAT YOU CHECK REGULARLY, AND THAT YOU DO NOT ANTICIPATE WILL CHANGE DURING THIS APPLICATION PROCESS.   OUR PRIMARY METHOD OF COMMUNICATING WITH YOU WILL BE VIA THE EMAIL ADDRESS THAT YOU SUPPLIED ON YOUR FAFSA FORM.

Once we receive our internal financial aid application back, we will notify you of any further documentation needed to complete your file.  If additional documents are requested, you may submit the documents:

Reviewing and accepting your award

Within 2-3 weeks after we receive your completed information, we will email an award letter to the address you supplied on your FAFSA form, along with additional instructions for completing the financial aid process.  Review your award carefully.  This offer will outline the aid for which you are eligible.  Follow the instructions accompanying your offer letter to determine the next step in processing your aid.

You have a maximum of 30 days from the date the letter is posted, to respond to this offer. If the date of this offer is made fewer than 30 days prior to the beginning of classes, you must respond no later then the first day of classes.  We only require that you send us a reply if you wish to DECLINE any portion of the award offer.  If we do not hear back from you, we will assume you wish to accept all of the aid offered in the award letter.

Entrance Counseling

Approximately 30-60 days before the beginning of your first semester, we will send you an email notifying you of our entrance interview requirement.  We require online completion of the entrance interview prior to disbursing any funds on your behalf.  During orientation, we will also hold a mandatory in-person entrance interview.  All federal aid recipients are required to attend an entrance counseling session prior to receiving any aid.  Failure to attend will result in the cancellation of your aid.

Funds Arrive

If you have accepted the Federal Stafford or Federal Perkins Loans, you will be required to sign a Master Promissory Note online via the Edfund Website.  Edfund is the primary Student Loan Guarantor for the Monterey Institute.   We have made arrangements with lenders to have your loan funds sent electronically to the Monterey Institute. Upon receipt of the loan funds, we will credit your student account.

Before releasing any loan funds to your student account, we will check to make sure you have completed the entrance interview requirement, and that you have registered for the number of units that we packaged you for.  If the amount of aid you applied for exceeds the amount of tuition due, we will issue a refund check to you for living expenses.  Checks are generally available for you to pick up sometime during the second week of classes. The earlier you complete the steps outlined above, the earlier your funds will be available to you.

If the total aid you are receiving does not cover your tuition and fees, you will need to make arrangements to pay the balance due at the Cashier's Office. Payment of tuition and fees is required by 4:00 p.m. on the first day of each semester.
