Position description:*

XYZ Organization is looking for a Proposal Writer to provide support to senior management and staff to research and develop funding proposals and reports for a broad audience of funders, including foundations, corporations, individuals, non-profit organizations, and government. The organization funds its programs and operations through three methods: grants from institutional donors, donations from individuals, and contracts from consulting services. The proposal writer will support all three funding areas. This full-time position will be based in San Francisco, California. This is a salaried, exempt position and requires a 40 hour work-week commitment. This position reports to the Fundraising Director.


  • Preparing proposals and grant applications.

  • Coordinating proposal budgets with country staff and Finance team.

  • Coordinating with team in revising and finalizing donor and client reports.

  • Researching and responding to public and private grant opportunities (calls for tender, guidelines for proposals, funding trends, etc.) in Latin America.

  • Systematizing proposal templates.

  • Researching sector-specific issues in Latin America.

  • Other related research, writing and editing tasks, as needed.

  • Updating Salesforce database with new proposals submitted and collaborating with team to maintain the database.

  • Providing summarized information to XYZ Organization senior management and program staff to inform fundraising strategy and decisions.


  • MA strongly preferred, BA required. Relevant work experience strongly preferred. Experience working in emerging market countries is a plus; experience demonstrating a proven track record in securing new funding opportunities is a strong plus.

  • Fluent in English; fluency in Spanish highly desirable, but at least intermediate Spanish is required (language skills will be tested).

  • Impeccable writing skills; academic editing and grant writing experience.

  • Very strong capacity to conduct research and organize information.

  • Highly organized, with strong attention to detail; ability to effectively work under pressure, manage multiple tasks simultaneously, and produce high quality work within tight time constraints.

  • Excellent communication skills and computer skills including knowledge of Word, PowerPoint, and Excel spreadsheets.

  • Passion for social change issues; knowledge of international nonprofit environment a plus.

  • Ability to be flexible, resourceful and innovative in a small, dynamic, nonprofit environment.

  • Ability to work independently and as a member of a team.

  • Experience working in a multi-cultural environment.
