E-Citation Guides

MLA Style

Style guidelines authorized by the Modern Language Association for documenting sources from the World Wide Web.

APA Style

Reference formats recommended by American Psychological Association for citing electronic sources. Covers citing e-mail communications, citing a Web site, citing specific documents on a Web site, citing articles and abstracts from electronic databases and Web citations in text.

Columbia Guide

The Columbia Guide to Online Style presents elements of style for both humanities and scientific style electronically accessed sources. It is one of many Web sites that provide guidelines and examples of electronic source citations.

Government

GPO Access

A service of the U.S. Government Printing Office providing full text access to information produced by the Federal Government. Databases include the Federal Register, the Code of Federal Regulations, Congressional Bills, the Congressional Record and Commerce Daily.

GPO Gate

A site providing easy access to Government Printing Office information. Designed as a gateway to laws, regulations, reports and data from publications such as the Congressional Record, the Federal Register, Economic Indicators, GAO Reports, the Budget of the U.S. Government, the Government Manual and the Congressional Directory.

Federal Web Locator

A site of World Wide Web links to federal government information. Covers legislative, executive and judicial branches, presenting connections to departments, counsels, boards, systems, administrations, services, codes, commissions, courts, committees and offices.

Census Bureau

U.S. Census Bureau data on people and economy of the United States. Presents statistics on population demographics, income, poverty, government, trade, wages, jobs, manufacturing, transport, new home sales, county business patterns, maps, gazetteer and more.

FedWorld

Provides access to government and business information. Some 20 databases are available, including federal job announcements, U.S. customs traveler information, Internal Revenues Service, Supreme Court decisions, harmonized tariff schedule and more. Also provides satellite images and meta databases, pointing to other sources of information.

Thomas

Covers current actions on the House and Senate floors, House and Senate directories, major legislation, status and text of bills, roll call votes, public laws, the Congressional Record, schedules of House and Senate committees, Committee Reports and historical documents.

United Nations

Identifies the structure and work of the United Nations including functions, members, sessions, subsidiary bodies and programs of the principal organs. Provides the text of the UN Charter and the Universal Declaration of Human Rights, gives a history of the UN, and includes links to UN publications and sales, UN documents and maps.

Europa

Official site for European Union information, including press releases from EU members, euro rates and latest statistics. Presents links to homepages of Parliament, Council, Commission, Court of Justice, European Investment Bank and other EU institutions. Gives access to information on citizens rights, official documents, legislative activity, legal texts and publications.

European Union Internet Resources

Highly organized site providing easy access links to extensive information produced by the European Union. Covers all aspects of the EU and also provides access to EU journals, document collections, publications, legislation and treaties.

A gateway to electronic versions of newspapers worldwide. Also provides connections to other media types such as city guides, magazines, radio and television.

AJR/NewsLink

Contains links to some 3400 U.S. newspapers and over 2000 non-U.S. newspapers. Also covers magazines, radio and television, news services and journalism organizations.

CNN Interactive

News site presenting articles on national and international news, technology, politics, health, sports, entertainment, space and other topics.

San Francisco Chronicle/Examiner

Local northern California news plus general stories of national and international interest.

USA Today

Articles from the national newspaper and additional late breaking stories, special reports, AP online, polls and attitudes, guide to government and more.

Washington Post

News reported in the print edition as well as many other stories appearing online only with international, national and local D.C. coverage.

InterAm Database of International Treaties

Full legal texts of treaties, free trade agreements and international agreements concerning trade. Covers Latin American treaties, environmental and intellectual property treaties, NAFTA, MERCORSUR and other agreements.

Multilaterals Project

Texts of multilateral international conventions, treaties and other international law instruments in the fields of environment, human rights, commerce and trade, war and arms control, and other areas.

World Constitutions and International Treaties

Extensive array of links to the texts of constitutions of the countries of the world as well as to international agreements. Covers arms control and rules of war, cultural protection and intellectual property, human rights, environment and biological diversity.

Language Resources

Online Dictionaries

Indexes dictionaries, thesauri and other relevant reference works pertaining to words and phrases. It contains works for over seventy different languages.

The Foreign Language Teaching Forum (FLTEACH)

The flagship for foreign language teachers regarding information and discussion on methods as well as for access to specific teaching materials. It includes an index to foreign language resources on the Internet.

An online version of the popular Merriam Webster English language dictionary.

Business and Trade

STAT-USA

Comprehensive resource giving up-to-date information on economic indicators, gross domestic product, exchange rates, personal income, consumer and producer price indexes, earnings, housing, manufacturing and economic policy. Includes the National Trade Data bank, focusing on statistics as well as information from the World Fact Book, Background Notes and area handbooks.

International Trade Administration

Offers information on trade statistics, trade rights and agreement compliance, commercial service export counseling, antidumping and countervailing duty cases and cross-cutting programs. Includes press releases, speeches, hot issues and announcements.

EDGAR

Contains a collection of documents filed by public companies with the Securities and Exchange Commission. Also includes information on current SEC rule making, Enforcement Division and small business.

North American Industry Classification System

New system of codes for identification of U.S. industry and sectors. Includes a system for converting from the old Standard Industrial Classification code scheme to the NAICS and vice versa.

Tradeport

A composite of trade information collected from primary sources and organized for easy searching. Some information requires payment, but information assembled from government sources requires no payment. Covers how to export, market research, financing, country information, news, trade events and other topics.

Economic Statistics

Gives access to current federal economic indicators. Covers output, production, sales, orders and inventories, income, expenditures and wealth, employment, unemployment and earnings, prices, money, credit and interest rates, transportation and international statistics.

International Studies

International Affairs Resources

A section of the WWW Virtual Library presenting annotated links to international affairs topics. Covers media sources, international organizations, regions and countries and topics such as world religions, health, human rights and international law, international business, global environment and international comparative education.

African Studies

A comprehensive collection of African Internet sources compiled by Columbia University. Provides links to African studies programs and research centers, electronic journals and newspapers, international directory of African scholars, libraries, book dealers and publishers as well as resources listed by region and country, organization and topic.

Asian Studies

A prime site consolidating links to scholarly information on the Internet regarding Asian and Pacific studies. Covers information resources for regions, individual countries and territories plus links to electronic journals, conferences, databases, search engines, bookshops and study abroad.

Latin American Studies

The Latin American Network Information Center at the University of Texas hosts links with regard to Latin American studies and culture. Topics covered for each country include education, recreation, science, government, economy, sustainable development, libraries and many others.

Middle Eastern Studies

The University of Texas provides access to the Center for Middle Eastern Studies. Covers arts and culture, business and economy, education, government and politics, history and archaeology, new and current events for each country. Also provide links to sites dealing with energy, religion, society and travel.

Russian and East European Studies

Sponsored by the Center of Russian and East European Studies at the University of Pittsburgh, presents a comprehensive index to electronic resources on the area. Includes information on language and culture, public affairs, government, business, economics, history, science, technology and other subjects.

West European Studies

Co-sponsored by the University Library System and the Center for West European Studies at the University of Pittsburgh, this site contains references to resources on the Internet on Western Europe and subject oriented research guides on the European Union.
