Elias Shakkour: A Passion for Language
Elias Shakkour (T&I '10) interned this summer at text & form, a translation agency located in Berlin, Germany specializing in technical and software translation. He translated texts from German to English for clients from a variety of sectors and industries.
Elias grew up in Jerusalem, where he attended an American school and spoke both English and Arabic from an early age. When he was about thirteen, he began studying French and discovered his passion for languages, which eventually led to his pursuit of a translation and interpretation degree. He learned German while he was a student at Colgate University and then earned a Master's degree in German from Middlebury College before coming to Monterey.
The internship gave him the opportunity to gain more exposure to the translation field, improve his German speaking abilities, and network with professionals.
In the future, he hopes to use his language abilities to bridge cross-cultural divides and find a job after graduation that combines his Arabic and German skills, for example, as an Arabic interpreter for the Federal Foreign Office in Germany.
