If it weren’t for National Philanthropy Day (NPD), an annual day of honor and celebration hosted by the Association of Fundraising Professionals on the 15th of November, people like Peter Grothe, who regularly go about their business of giving, might never get publicly recognized. The purpose of this day is to acknowledge great contributions of philanthropy to the enrichment of the world.
Dr. Grothe, director of International Student Programs at the Monterey Institute, is certainly worthy of recognition. Renowned on campus for his work in international student recruitment, he also has given 130 scholarships to Monterey Institute students, totaling more than $1,000,000. Most scholarships have gone to women from developing countries, for whom advanced education can have an enormous impact.
"But most of Peter's giving has been done anonymously," wrote Assistant Professor Jeff Langholz; "a fact that will come as no surprise to those who know him."

Dr. Grothe is also widely recognized as the "campus photographer," having brought the faces and the friendships from the world he calls his hometown to the corridors of the Monterey Institute campus.
Last fall, Dr. Grothe was publicly honored, on National Philanthropy Day®, for being one of the area's leading philanthropists. It probably won’t change the professor or his charitable ways, but is sure it nice to know-and to recognize. |
