The Monterey Institute Dedicated the James Martin Center for Nonproliferation Studies
with a Panel Discussion by World-Renowed Leaders in Nonproliferation

Hunger. Poverty. Racism. Genocide. Ecosystem degradation. Climate change. Weapons of mass destruction. Hope. The 21st century is likely to be among the most challenging, threatening, and enlightening of all time. If we survive it.

British-born Dr. James Martin doesn’t purport to have all the solutions to the global issues of the 21st century. But, in 2005, he did provide the vision and the endowment necessary to establish the James Martin 21st Century School at Oxford University, a research school dedicated to developing “new concepts, policies, and technologies that will make the future a better place to be.”

And now, the Pulitzer nominee for the 1977 book, The Wired Society: A Challenge for Tomorrow, who also is gaining international notoriety for his 2006 publication, The Meaning of the 21st Century, has made a significant donation to the Monterey Institute of International Studies Center for Nonproliferation Studies (CNS).

The naming event, which took place on the Monterey Institute campus on Thursday, June 28, featured “Nuclear Nonproliferation, Regime in Crisis?” a high-profile panel discussion including Dr. Martin and moderated by CNS founder and director Professor William Potter.

"The nuclear nonproliferation regime today faces tremendous challenges,” said Potter. “In order to better understand the nature of these threats and to generate innovative but practical policy responses, the Monterey Institute convened a three-day workshop of leading nonproliferation practitioners and experts from around the world.  The public forum on June 28 previewed these discussions will featured a panel discussion with six past and present senior government officials from the United States, Germany, Sri Lanka, Egypt, Canada, and Hungary.  The public seminar also honored Dr. James Marin, a visionary, author and philanthropist."

This panel presented a unique opportunity to hear from a rare assembly of world-renowned leaders in nonproliferation, including Ambassador Paul Meyer, Canadian Permanent Representative to the Conference on Disarmament; Ambassador Linton Brooks, former Under Secretary of Energy for Nuclear Security; Ambassador Jayantha Dhanapala, former United Nations Under-Secretary-General for Disarmament Affairs; Nabil Fahmy, Egyptian Ambassador to the United States; and Ambassador Rüdiger Lüdeking, Deputy Commissioner of the Federal Government for Disarmament and Arms Control, Federal Foreign Office, Germany; and Ambassador Tibor Toth, Executive Secretary, Comprehensive Test Ban Treaty Organization.
