Irvine Auditorium, GSIPS, GSTI, GSLEL, Faculty Offices
The John and Theiline McCone Building is a two-story structure that houses offices for the following graduate programs: GSIPS (Graduate School of International Policy Studies), GSLEL (Graduate School of Language and Educational Linguistics) & GSTI (Graduate Schools of Translation & Interpretation).
The building previously housed the Monterey Herald newspaper. Through a gift from former Atomic Energy Commission head and CIA Director John McCone (a long-time Monterey Institute trustee), the Institute was able to purchase the building in the early 1990s. An additional grant from the James Irvine Foundation allowed the Institute to include a 265-seat auditorium; other donations provided for the redesign and renovation of the existing structure of classrooms, faculty offices, and seminar rooms. The atrium is named for former donor Jean Arthur, a famous actress of the Golden Age of studio cinema. |
