About Us
The English Language (EL) Fellow Program promotes English language learning around the world and fosters mutual understanding between the people of the United States and those of other countries. It places talented, highly qualified U.S. educators with Master’s degrees with a focus in TEFL/TESL or Applied Linguistics in all regions of the world. Through U.S. embassy projects, Fellows share their expertise, hone their skills, gain international experience, and learn about other cultures. Upon returning to the United States, they share their experiences and acquired knowledge with their communities and professional colleagues.
The EL Fellow Program is funded by the U.S. Department of State (DOS) within the Bureau of Educational and Cultural Affairs (ECA), Office of English Language Programs, and is administered nationally by the Center for Intercultural Education and Development (CIED) at Georgetown University, Washington, DC.
The Monterey Institute and the ELF Program
The Graduate School of Translation, Interpretation, and Language Teacher Education at MIIS is proud to partner with Georgetown University and the Center for Intercultural Education and Development. As a Regional Recruitment Center, MIIS aids in sending highly qualified MATESOL holders to countries abroad to promote the study of English as a foreign language and to enhance EFL teaching.
Currently, MIIS alumna Matt Robinson is serving an EL Fellowship in Dili, Timor Leste, at the Universidade Nacional Timor Lorosa'e (UNTL). Click here to read about Matt's success implementing content-based English language instruction with Ba Futuro, a peace-building NGO that specializes in teaching human rights and post-conflict resolution to the local community.
