Internships

Check out what just a few of our International Policy students have been up to this past summer:

Human Rights

Rangineh Azimzadeh was selected as a 2009 Peace Fellow with The Advocacy Project. She worked with the Democracy and Workers' Rights Center (DWRC) in Palestine. The DWRC works to promote worker's direct experience of democracy through the advancement of labor education and democratic unions. Read more about Rangineh's project on the Advocacy Project website. Benjamin Mitchell participated in a training seminar at the University of Johannesberg in South Africa exploring transitional justice and human rights wth a focus on post-apartheid South Africa.

Johanna Paillet was been selected as a 2009 Peace Fellow with The Advocacy Project. She worked for the Vital Voices program in Cameroon, Africa, an international non-profit organization focusing on women's human rights. Johanna worked on two projects: one with women market traders in the areas of public health and sanitation, and the other on raising awareness about women's reproductive health in rural areas. International Development

Cory Belden interned with Action Africa Help-International (AAH), an East African NGO dedicated to food and income security, reintegration, civil society building, and primary healthcare.  She  developed a Monitoring & Evaluation system and assisted in capacity development for AAH South Sudan while conducting independent research related to current governance, peacebuilding, and security issues in the region.

International Diplomacy

Rachel Beck, after completing the DPMI program, interned at the US Embassy in Tokyo through the US Department of State, exploring a potential future career in the Foreign Service.

George Garner interned with the Global Leadership Coalition in Washington, DC, advocating for a strong U.S. International Affairs Budget and a greater role for development assistance and diplomacy in U.S. foreign policy. 

Sanaz Tofighrad interned with the National Iranian American Council in Washington, DC this summer monitoring congressional activities, researching legislation, and drafting alerts on issues related to immigration, civil rights, and foreign policy.

Theresa Williams, a Pickering Fellow, had an internship with the US Department of State in Dar es Salaam, Tanzania as a Political Officer this summer.

International Education

Megan Crowley had a paid internship in the Hosting Division of the American Field Service Intercultural Programs in New York City for this summer.

Zhila Emadi worked for the University of California Education Abroad Program.

Daniel Stolkowski worked as a course instructor for Where There Be Dragons. He led a group of high school students on rugged learning adventures along the ancient Silk Road in western China.  The program incorporated experiential education, service learning, and intellectually challenging experiences.

Wrenn Yennie was be an American delegate at the Japan-America Student Conference (JASC) this summer. The month-long conference took place at numerous locations in Japan. Wrenn contributed to the roundtable, "Educating a Global Citizentry."

International Migration Studies

Ena Yasuhara interned with two San Francisco-based organizations this summer. She worked as one of the Program Coordinators for YouthCares, a youth program of the International Institute of the Bay Area that serves high school immigrants. She also worked as the Program Evaluation intern for C.E.O. Women, a microenterprise organization in Oakland that provides immigrant and refugee women with entrepreneurship and ESL training.

International Public Health

Jennie Konsella-Norene interned with the Firelight Foundation in Santa Cruz, CA.  The foundation is dedicated to supporting and advocating for the needs of children who are affected by HIV/AIDS in Sub-Saharan Africa.  She worked with the Firelight grant-making team and focused on reviewing and analyzing grantee partner final reports as well as preparing for the fall Advisory Board meeting.

Anna Luehr interned for the International Medical Corps in Washington, DC for the East/Southern Africa Desk. Her work focused specifically on communications, fundraising and monitoring and evaluation.

Nikki Zimmerman interned this summer with Winrock International in Southern Sudan.  She worked on developing and implementing the monitoring & evaluation system for a capacity building centered program within education, community development, food security & livelihoods, governance, as well as water, sanitation and health sectors.

International Security

David Moorer interned with the Bonn International Center for Conversion (BICC) in Bonn, Germany, working on Wartime Rape, Armed Violence and Predictive Violence Mapping.

Phillip Schell worked for the International Crisis Group in Beijing during this past summer, analyzing China-Myanmar relations and China's North Korea policy. Currently, Phillip is interning at the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA) in Vienna conducting work related to Iran and Syria's nuclear programs.

International Trade

Craig Belden interned with Action Africa Help-International, an East African NGO dedicated to food and income security, reintegration, civil society building, and primary healthcare.  He developed a Monitoring and Evaluation system and assisting in capacity develoment for AAH South Sudan.  He also researched the potential integration of small and medium sized agriculture business into national trade policy strategy.

Damon Shulenberger interned at the International Trade Commission in Washington DC this summer, assisting with research on various trade issues such as intellectual property rights, competitiveness and standards setting.

Language Study

Luke Dodds was awarded a Critical Language Scholarship to study Chinese in Suzhou, China.

Sam Marrero received the US State Department’s Critical Language Scholarship to study Arabic in Cairo, Egypt.

Fellowships

Leloba Pahl received a William Randolph Hearst Fellowship and will be working at The Aspen Institute in Washington, D.C. this summer for the Program on Philanthropy and Social Innovation. She contributed to the design and implementation of workshops and leadership development initiatives to improve the matching of donor/recipient objectives.
