Clara Yu

A pioneering innovator in the use of technology in education, Dr. Clara Yu is the 12th President of the Monterey Institute of International Studies of Monterey, California, a graduate institution offering degrees in international policy, international business, educational linguistics, and translation and interpretation.

Dr. Yu has served on technology task forces and consulted for educational institutions in the U.S. and abroad. Her extensive scholarly publications and presentations cover a wide array of subjects, including information technology, liberal arts education, language pedagogy, natural language processing, artificial intelligence, and Chinese literature and history.

Born in China and educated in Taiwan and the United States, she received a Ph.D. in Comparative Literature from the University of Illinois in 1978, and taught at Dartmouth College and the University of Maryland before starting an artificial intelligence consulting firm. Returning to academe a decade later, she joined the faculty of Middlebury College. As Vice President for Languages at Middlebury, she re-engineered the College's Language Schools and Schools Abroad. She also designed a rigorous three-year International B.A. program, combining a core curriculum and regional concentration with advanced language requirement and extended study abroad. This became the prototype for the widely acclaimed International Studies Major at Middlebury College.

In 2001, with funding from the Andrew W. Mellon Foundation, Dr. Yu founded the National Institute for Technology and Liberal Education (NITLE), a virtual organization designed to serve as a catalyst for innovation and collaboration for 81 liberal arts colleges, making effective use of technology for teaching, learning, research, and information management. Programs offered by NITLE have included information fluency, geographic information system across the curriculum, bioinformatics, curriculum delivery via handheld devices, gaming for education, data mining, and social and knowledge networks.

Now, as president of the Monterey Institute, Dr. Yu is applying innovative models to graduate education, exploring new means of curricular design, delivery, and global outreach.
