Bangkok Alumni

  • Bangkok Alumni Join Prof. Peter Grothe 11/26/07
    Professor Peter Grothe hosted a well attended alumni reception in Bangkok durig his travels last semester. More than 15 alumni gathered to enjoy an evening of story telling, reminiscing, and updates from one of their favourite professors.  Held at the V9 Restaurant of the Sofitel Silom Hotel, alumni from all four graduate schools attended.  Thanks to alumna Marisa Pitsch (IPS '02) for her help in coordinating this event!  Photos of the reception coming soon! 

Welcome Alumni in Stockholm

  • Let's Get Together in Stockholm on 11/19/07
    Comtinuing his roving travels for 2007, Professor Peter Grothe joined an intimate group of alumni on November 19th at the Restaurang Stockholm, Centralplan, Stockholm.Thanks to alumna Ebba Lindegren (CD '03) for her help in coordinating this event!
Chicago Area Alumni
  • Join Us in Chicago 11/19/07
    Enrollment Manager Mary Lineberger (MBA '03) hosted a reception for our alumni in the "Windy City" at the Aria Restaurant in the Fairmont Hotel.  Mary was in town for the Green Festival, and took this opportunity to get together with a range of policy and MBA alumni.  After the reception, one alumna offered to restart the Chicago-area alumni chapter, so stay tuned for more information on upcoming chapter events!

Monterey Area Alumni
  • Come Back to Campus Happy Hour 11/16/07
    The first Alumni/Student Happy Hour was a great success, with more than 25 local alumni dropping by to share a beer and some stories about their "schools days" with current students and faculty.  Thanks to the Student Council and Institutional Advancement staff for their help with planning.  The Alumni Office plans to host another joint happy hour in 2008--and this time we'll know to have cups for the alumni!

Alumni in Atlanta

  • Monterey Institute Board of Trustee Member Hosted 11/13/07 Event in Atlanta
    Board of Trustees member, Dr. Karen Stolley, along with visiting (former) Dean Ruth Larimer of the Graduate School of Language and Educational Linguistics, welcomed a small group of alumni to Dr. Stolley's home.  Thanks to those who braved the traffic and weather to attend and a special thank you to Dr. Stolley for her generousity in hosting this reception!
Alumni Reception Planned for Olso, Norway
  • Join Us In Oslo 11/13/07
    Professor Peter Grothe, while making one of his annual excursions to Norway, took the opportunity to gather a select group of alumni for a reception. Held at SydOst Restaurant in Oslo, the alumni enjoyed the chance to meet, share their memories of the Institute, and make plans for future get-togethers.          Thanks to Mirella Gullaksen (MBA '99) and Ine Andersen (IPS '99) for their help in coordinating this event, and special thanks to Ove Gusevik (MBA '90 and Board of International Advisors member) for hosting the reception!                                                                                                 Watch for photos of the reception....coming soon!

Copenhagen, Denmark

  • Welcome to all Copenhagen Alumni 11/07/07
    Director of Enrollment Management Jill Stoffers (CD '00) hosted a lovely reception at the Cafe Royal in the Radisson SAS Royal Hotel Copenhagen on November 7th.  The alumni attending included several former FUHU exchange students, and all were excited to hear of the many new changes to the campus since their student days. Thanks to alumna Jill Stoffers (CD '00) for her help in hosting this reception!


ATA Conference Brings Translation and Interpretation Alumni from Around the World to San Francisco

  • Translation and Interpretation Alumni Reception 11/02/07
    More than 150 alumni, Graduate School of Translation and Interpretation faculty, staff and current students joined President Clara Yu, President Emeritus Steve Baker, select Board of International Advisors' members, and special guests at the Monterey Institute's GSTI Alumni Reception.  Held in conjunction with the American Translators' Assocation (ATA) Conference, GSTI alumni took this opportunity to reconnect with their fellow alumni, and offered a lot of good advice and suggestions to the many current students attending both the reception and the conference.                                                   Thanks to James Breckenridge (TI '08) for his help in coordinating this reception!


Alumni Meet in Dubai, Muscat, Manama, Kuwait City and Jeddah

  • We Hope to See You in the Middle East 10/29-11/07
    Professor Peter Grothe, as part of a multi-country recruitment trip, took the opportunity to meet with some of our alumni based in the Middle East. Prof. Grothe enjoyed catching lunch with alumni in Dubai, United Arab Emirates (10/29/07), chatting with an alumna helping him at a graduate school fair table in Muscat, Oman (10/31/07), and trying to meet up with our solo alumna in Kuwait City, Kuwait (11/05/07)!  We hope to host more events in the UAE, Saudi Arabia, Oman, Bahrain and Kuwait as our recruitment office promotes our new MA in Arabic Translation and Interpretation..so stay tuned for information about upcoming receptions.


Provost Amy Sands and the Boston Area Alumni

  • Alumni Join Provost Sands 10/10/07
    Provost Amy Sands hosted at an informal alumni reception for all Boston area alumni at John Harvards Brew Pub off of Harvard Square, attended by a dozen alumni and two Board of Trustee members. Provost Sands enjoyed the opportunity to mix and connect wit our alumni, and there may be a rejuvenated alumni chapter coming soon to Boston..so watch for more information!

Geneva Alumni Reception

    A merry group of alumni joined Alumni Director Leah Gowron on Tuesday, October 9th for an informal reception. With rounds of mojitos and tapas at Cafe Cuba (just off of Place du Cirque, Plainpalais, Geneva), it was a fun time to meet, network and share many stories. A Geneva alumni chapter may soon be established...stay tuned for news!

New York Area Alumni Reception

  • 9/17/07
    Alumni director Leah Gowron met with more than 25 alumni in New York City at the Third Floor Cafe. Lasting over three hours, the event was a clear success, with many alumni excited to hear that the New York alumni chapter was, once again, active. Alumni from the Class of 1976 to the Class of 2007 enjoyed the first chance in several years to get together. New friendships were made, some business deals were discussed (come on...this IS New York!), and the attendees were happy to welcome a Monterey Institute Board member and her family to the reception.

San Francisco Area MBA Alumni
  • Hosted Fall Happy Hour 9/07/07
    More than 25 MBA alumni and six December 2007 MBA students joined Dean Ernie Scalberg of the Fisher Graduate School of International Business, Career Director John Mattson, Student Advisor Toni Thomas (MBA 00) and Alumni Director Leah Gowron (MPA 97) at the San Francisco MBA Alumni Chapter's Fall Happy Hour.
    Held on the outdoor patio of the California Pizza Kitchen's restaurant on 3rd St., the alumni had the opportunity to hear some of the "good news" stories of the MBA school, networked, and supported their future (December 2007) MBA student colleagues.
    Thanks to Daniel Schereck (MBA 05) for his assistance with planning this event, and for joining with Kristin Buemi (MBA 05) as this chapter's co-coordinator.
San Jose and South San Francisco Area
  • Alumni Happy Hour 9/06/07
    A fun crowd of 15 San Jose area/South San Francisco area alumni joined Alumni Director Leah Gowron at Gordon Biersh Brew Pub in downtown San Jose on Thursday, September 6th.
    As part of the merriment (and great appetizers!), the San Jose/South Bay alumni chapter coordinators took this opportunity to meet and being planning future events. Look for more announcements coming soon from this enthusiastic group of alumni!

Local Monterey Alumni

  • Happy Hour and Speaker 8/20/07
    More than 20 alumni joined alumni director Leah Gowron for an informal Happy Hour at one of Monterey's newest coffee houses. The 'Ol Factory Cafe (San City), owned by the Morgan's Coffee House family, was the site for an evening of appetizers, wine, beer and coffee concoctions, and networking.
    After an hour of mixing and mingling, the alumni, joined by members of the Monterey County Citizens for Middle East Peace, had the opportunity to hear speaker Anna Baltzer. Anna spent the last few years in Palestine, as an Fulbrighter and volunteer with the International Women's Peace Services, documenting human rights issues in Palestine, and supporting non-violent movements against Occupation.
    Thanks to Ann McDowell (BA Hispanic Studies, '80) for her efforts to have this event co-sponsored by the Alumni Office.
Tokyo Alumni Reception

    Professor Tsuneo Akaha (Graduate School of International Policy Studies) hosted a formal alumni reception and dinner for our Tokyo-area alumni on August 16th. Alumni from the four graduate schools attended a buffet reception with a summer "celebration" theme at the International House of Japan in Tokyo. Prof. Akaha provided updates on the Middlebury affiliation, new programs on campus, and acted as the perfect host to an evening of memories and networking.

  • Alumni Reception 8/16/07
    More than 30 alumni, faculty, WTO program participants (a short-term, on-campus program coordinated by the Fisher Business School for visiting WTO Chinese delegates), and current students on internships in Beijing joined Professors Lynette Shi (GSTI) and Tate Miller (GSIPS) for a fun evening of story-telling, updates on the Middlebury affiliation, networking for recent graduates, and plans to start a Beijing alumni chapter.
    Special thanks to Prof. Miller (CD 99) and Kim Todd (MBA 95) for hosting the reception, and offering to become the new Beijing alumni chapter coordinators. Stay tuned for more announcements from this group in a Halloween celebration happy hour in October.

Center for Nonproliferation Studies Dedication Ceremony

  • June 28th-Alumni Welcome!
    The Center for Nonproliferation Studies was dedicated as the "James Martin Center for Nonproliferation Studies" on Thursday, June 28th.
    A panel discussion "Nuclear Nonproliferation: Regime in Crisis" was part of the ceremony, and included world-renowned panel speakers Ambassador Linton Brooks, Ambassador Jayantha Dhanapala, Ambassador Nabil Fahmy, Ambassador Rudiger Ludeking, Ambassador Paul Meyer and Ambassador Tibor Toth, along with special guest of honor Dr. James Martin. Dr. Bill Potter, CNS Director, acted as the panel's moderator.


Brussels Alumni Happy Hour

  • June 23rd
    Professor Harmer (Graduate School of Translation and Interpretation) took time from a frantic summer travel and work schedule to host her second alumni reception in a month. Alumni and current students interning in the region attended. Prof. Harmer provided the attendees with news from the campus, updates on the Middlebury affiliation, and other activities.

Monterey Alumni Gather in Vienna
  • May 30th
    An intimate gathering of Monterey Institute alumni, students from the Graduate School of International Policy Studies interning in Vienna this summer, a former Center for Nonproliferation Studies researcher and his soon-to-be Institute-bound daughter joined Professor Jacolyn Harmer (Graduate School of Translation and Interpretation) in Vienna May 30th for an informal alumni reception. Hosted by Professor Harmer, and held at the Heuriger "Weingut Am Reisenberg" in Grinzing, the alumni enjoyed the chance to get together, share stories with the current students, and take this opportunity to expand their Vienna network. Many of the alumni and the student interns are working in local UN agencies, and so they hope to meet up in the hallways or cafeterias in the months to come. Special thanks to Christa Wendl (MACI '96), Ingrid Haussteiner (MACI '96) and Irina Palfry (CI '96) for their support and assistance with the event planning! 50th Anniversary Tokyo Alumni Reunion

    President Clara Yu, GSIPS Professor Tsuneo Akaha, Center for Nonproliferation Studies' Senior Researchers J.D. Yuan and Dan Pinkston, and several members of the Monterey Institute's Board of International Advisors joined more than 50 alumni at the International House of Japan in Roppongi, Tokyo. After an early cocktail reception, President Yu provided the alumni with a brief overview of the Monterey-Middlebury affiliation process, and took time to learn a little about each alum. We hope to host more events in Japan in the future, as Japan is home to the largest number of Institute alumni outside of the United States.
