In May 1998, a generous gift from Joseph and Carolyn Samson presented the Monterey Institute of International Studies with the opportunity to build a student center. At the time, the gift provided full funding for the proposed facility. When Joe Samson passed away, gifts in his memory for the Samson Student Center construction provided additional funding.
The Samson Student Center is an environmentally friendly facility thanks to additional support from the Hayward family to offset the cost of "greening" the building. "Green" improvements will include energy efficient heating and lighting systems, low polyurethane spray-applied insulation and ceramic tiles, carpet and acoustic panels made from recycled materials.
Completed in Winter 2002 the 5,000 square foot structure provides a central meeting place and a new venue for student activities offering personal, professional and cultural enrichment for students to enhance their classroom education. The Samson Student Center provides:
- A spacious central multipurpose room with an adjacent kitchen and food service
- Media room with internet connections and satellite broadcasts
- Reading room stocked with multilingual print publications from around the world
- Landscaped courtyard for outdoor gatherings
- 38 additional Institute parking spaces
