Announcing a special International Student Enrollment Credit
for all new international students enrolling in fall 2007!
Please contact visas@miis.edu for additional information
The following information is intended to answer questions often asked by international students. Additional information will be provided after admission to the Institute. Please note: An international student is not a U.S. citizen and not a U.S. permanent resident alien.
Per U.S. federal regulations, the Monterey Institute requires you to submit a Certificate of Financial Responsibility (CFR). Support documents demonstrating sufficient financial resources for the first academic year of study must be submitted with the CFR. See Estimate of Average Student Expenses. The Institute requires that payment of all fees (application fee, tuition deposit, etc.) be in the form of a check drawn on a US bank, an International Postal Order in US dollars, or by credit card.

Some of you may qualify for a merit-based scholarship or private loan for studying at the Monterey Institute. Further information can be obtained from the Institute's Office of Student Financial Planning.

The Monterey Institute is SEVIS certified and eligible to issue SEVIS I-20 and DS-2019 forms. Once you have been admitted to the institute and have paid the tuition deposit, we will send you the SEVIS form. Additionally, the US government has recently implemented a new $100.00 SEVIS fee requirement for all F-1 and some J-1 visa applicants. The SEVIS payment information will be provided to you once you are accepted to the Monterey Institute.

International applicants should apply at least 5 months prior to the proposed enrollment due to the extra time required for correspondence and consulate processing times for visa applications. When sending your documents, we suggest you use airmail to prevent time delays.
Once you have been admitted to the Monterey Institute and your finances have been secured for your first year of study, we will send you a SEVIS I-20 form to apply for an F-1 Student Visa, or DS-2019 form to apply for a J-1 Exchange Visitor Visa. If you are already in the United States on a different type of visa, you may be required to apply for a change of status.
If you are currently attending another university in the United States and wish to transfer to the Monterey Institute, we will need you to complete a certification of student status form | Acrobat PDF (or certification of student status form | Excel) before we can transfer your SEVIS record to the Monterey Institute. You should consult with the international student advisor at your school regarding the transfer procedures.

In addition to the orientation required for all new students prior to the first semester of enrollment, international students are required to attend a mandatory orientation. This provides practical information on immigration requirements, US academic policies, and general adjustment to life in the United States. There are also cross-cultural, optional practical training, and curricular practical training workshops for international students during the academic year.
International Students on nonimmigrant visas are prohibited by US regulations from working off campus during the first academic year of study in the United States. Approval for off campus employment must be obtained in advance. Work opportunities may also be available on campus for international students. International students who enroll at the Institute are provided with information about working off campus during designated time periods following the first year of study and also after graduation.
