How long will it take to hear back once I have submitted my application?
Approximately 2-4 weeks after the Admissions Office has received a completed application, application fee and all required support documents.
When is the deadline to apply for admission?
The Monterey Institute accepts applications throughout the year. However, there are priority deadlines for Institute scholarships; refer to Scholarship Information below for deadlines.

Does the Institute offer tours?
Yes, the Admissions Office will arrange a campus tour and make appointments for you with program representatives. Tours are available most weekdays. Please email admit@miis.edu or call 831-647-4123 or 1-800-824-7235 at least one week in advance to schedule a campus visit.
How many students are enrolled?
Approximately 780 students are enrolled. International students, coming from more than 50 different countries, make up approximately half of the student body. Monterey Institute students who are US citizens have typically studied, worked, or lived abroad. With the exception of students in the Teaching English to Speakers of Other Languages, all students at the Institute have knowledge of at least one language other than their native tongue.

How many faculty teach at the Monterey Institute?
There are approximately 70 regular resident faculty. The Institute frequently hosts other guest faculty who teach specialty courses, which adds to the diversity of course offerings. There are as many as 95 faculty each academic year.

How large are classes at the Institute?
Average classes vary by graduate school and level of specialization; for example, advanced classes in Translation and Interpretation often have fewer than 5 students whereas, introduction classes in the Graduate School of International Policy Studies may have 50 students.
How much is tuition?
Tuition and required fees for full-time students during the 2007-08 academic year total $27,750. For more detailed information, see: Tuition and Fee Schedule.
Is there a difference in tuition for international students or out of state students?
No. Tuition is the same for all Monterey Institute students.
Does the Monterey Institute offer financial aid?
US citizens and permanent residents may apply for need-based, federal financial aid (student loans, college work study and Institute grants). Please review Financial Aid Programs for more information. International students may be permitted to work a limited number of hours on campus.
Does the Monterey Institute offer scholarships?
All applicants (international students, US citizens and permanent residents) are invited to apply for a limited number of Monterey Institute scholarships. What languages can I study at the Monterey Institute?
Students in the Graduate School of International Policy Studies and the Fisher Graduate School of International Business are required to take foreign language courses as part of a Master's degree program. Degree languages include: Arabic, Chinese, French, German, Japanese, Russian and English. Korean is also available in the Graduate School of Translation and Interpretation. Other languages may be available by request with the permission of the Dean of the graduate school.
Do you offer distance learning courses or internet courses?
Yes, but most online courses are currently offered only to regularly enrolled students. The Computer-Assisted Language Learning online program offers a certificate for professional development or continuing education.
What is the academic calendar at the Monterey Institute?
The Monterey Institute operates on semesters. Fall classes typically begin the first Tuesday in September, Spring classes typically begin around January 21st. To view the current academic calendar please visit Calendar.
Do I get an email account and is it free?
Yes, all students have an email account and free Internet access.
Does the Institute provide student housing?
We do not have on-campus housing. However, our Student Affairs Office maintains housing information. Please see Housing for more details.
What kind of student activities are there at the Monterey Institute?
There are more than 40 different student groups that students can join on campus. Some of the groups include: Students Opposed to Small Arms; Community Volunteer Network; International Cooking Club; Ski Club; Student Council; and many language clubs.

The Institute is located in historic Old Monterey, surrounded by communities like Carmel-by-the-Sea, Pacific Grove, and Pebble Beach. We are just a two hour drive south of San Francisco, and five and half hours north of Los Angeles. Here is the link to our maps.

Is the Monterey Institute of International Studies accredited?
Yes. The Monterey Institute is accredited by the Western Association of Schools and Colleges, a higher education accrediting body recognized by the US Department of Education, that accredits public and private colleges and universities in California, Hawaii and the Pacific.
